Europe's oldest chestnut tree Known as the Hundred Horse tree, it has been gracing the eastern slopes of Europe's most active volcano (Etna in Sicily) for somewhere between two and four thousand years, meaning that it was certainly around when Julius Ceasar had his moment of doubt and pain on the senate steps, and possibly even before the events depicted in the Iliad and the Odyssey. It has survived so long despite being only 8km from the volcano's main crater.

Day 799, 30 August 2020
Etna in the 1800s (#Volcanomonday) I saw this image and realized that I would have made an extremely poor 19th-century naturalist due to my artistic skills, or more specifically lack thereof. That was apparently not the case for Sir Charles Lyell, one of the most well known geologists of the 18th century.

Trip to the summit of Mt. Etna

Looking the dragon in the eye - Summit rim Etna (Sound on for the magma gas expulsions!) A few mins later a HUGE explosion occurred and my good wife Lissy was completely freakin out! I loved it - so did Hugo and Cooper. We thought it was normal then they shut the summit for the next two to three days. So goes Vulcanology. This was one of the greatest nature experiences I have experienced. Put it on your bucket list
