Climbing the second highest peak in Washington (Mount Adams) this past weekend.
Solo camping trip in the Canadian Rockies. Days of total quiet, crackling fires, and sweeping hills. Saw no one, spoke to no one, sat with my quiet and made peace with the things that have been happening over the past several months. Mostly, I just climbed and climbed. With the border closure I’ve been unable to fly home to Minnesota, so I’ve been making-do in Canada in the meantime. My grandmother passed in April; we weren’t able to hold a funeral or to witness her burial, but I hope I can say good bye properly someday when it’s safe. In the meantime, the woods will just have to tide me over.

Our campground is an absolute dead zone, no service or WiFi and the only service in the area are two designated spots within Lassen Nat’l Park. It’s beautiful here though
The End-Triassic Mass Extinction Since the start of life with hard parts, there are 5 known major “mass extinctions” where large fractions of the species and higher order taxa on this planet went extinct in short order. Two of these are fairly well understood – the Cretaceous/Paleogene mass extinction was triggered by an asteroid impact, and the Permian/Triassic mass extinction was triggered by events occurring during gigantic volcanic eruptions in modern-day Siberia. The extinction in-between those events, at the boundary between the Triassic and Jurassic, is less well understood.

Union Glacier camp is a seasonal, remote field camp in West Antarctica. It is one of my favourite places in the world, due largely to the wonderful people that run and pass through the camp.
I have been lucky enough to work there several times, and this film is a very short guide to the camp and some of the people who work there.

We packed our gear and headed to New Zealand for a month, rented an SUV and lived out of it. We hiked, camped, swam in rivers and lakes; it was a grand time. Here's a little film doco'ing our time exploring both North & South Island.

- Video by @renan_ozturk // This is the 4,000ft thick Ruth Glacier. With walls larger than El Cap in every direction it is truly one of the great wonders of earth. I can say that even in the short decade I have been doing expeditions here the glacial retreat is clear and present. The camp you see pictured here is normally a pretty snowy affair, but in recent years it’s been rainy and hard to maintain life above the fern line. #climatechangeisreal #turningthetide

Hiking, Camping, and boating on Vancouver Island, British Columbia
I miss getting to practice geology. I miss the outdoors, hiking, the sights, the scenery, the different climates, the different ecosystems, I miss the rough terrains and being able to over come them.
I think what I miss feeling the most is having confidence in my abilities, both mentally and physically.
