THAT IS MAHOGANY
I thought this was a joke until I read the description
WHAT HTE FCUK
It’s one of my favorite pieces at the Renwick. It’s a solid block of mahogany and you can see the impression of knobs under the cloth.
when i die i hope i come back as a beautiful microscopic granule of sand
these are all me in my next life btw
#these are mostly Foraminifera and I once spent a month sorting through thousands of these on a microscope slide#I did resent them terribly for a while but I respect them too much for any of it to stick#they were 40 million years old#their shells hold chemical memories of the water temperature and salinity#so we can use them to reconstruct past sea levels#we can read the shapes of dead continents through the bodies of these creatures#we can track cycles of earth’s orbital precession in space#so I guess even if you don’t get to come back as a beautiful microscopic grain of sand something will (@catadromously )

Fireflies photograph in trees with long time exposure.
He was right: I do not believe my eyes.
[Image description: a long exposure photographnof a tree during dusk in winter. Uncountable thin light tracks show where fireflies have been moving between the ground and the tree as well as in its branches. End ID]
When you are a classical musician and the public asks you to play Queen …
@hieronymus-bush … although I’m not sure what you’ll think of it 😆
Holy hell. He has amazing technique AND he didn’t just transcribe the piece to piano, he essentially composed classical music (and honestly some neo-classical, lol) based on the melody. Plus, he kind of looks like Freddie.
People in the 1800s would've gone apeshit over this in the concert halls
Reblogging to watch later...
I think this guy just invented shredding on a piano
"Why is the song called that" "Oh, that's why"
Me giving the highest compliment I can think of: "You're like the tree of 40 fruits!"
For those wondering what that looks like. It was made by a Syracuse University professor Sam Van Aken, who grafted several stone fruits together to create these trees. It takes approximately 8 years for the tree to grow and produce fruits for those with money to burn and buy one. (Corrections welcomed by anyone who wants to add more).
The image captures the miraculous moment when the rays of sun hit a rare cloud called a pile cloud, and the angle and other subtle conditions are reflected in a divine rainbow color. (Source)
ALL HAIL THE GLOW CLOUD

The world's oldest story? Astronomers say global myths about 'seven sisters' stars may reach back 100,000 years https://phys.org/news/2020-12-world-oldest-story-astronomers-global.html
Holy shit, this is cool!
So many cultures call the Pleiades some variation of the "seven sisters" despite only having six visible stars. There only appear to be six because two of the stars are so close together as to appear as one.
The myths also mention one sister leaving or hiding to explain why there's only six. And based off observations and measurements, those two that are so close together used to be visibly separate. One literally has moved to hide.
And based off the similarities between the more commonly known Greek myth and the Aboriginal Australian myth, plus some other stuff, this myth could possibly even date back to when humanity still all resided in Africa!
And now I will have Blackmore’s Night playing “Fires at Midnight” in my head for several hours.
That is a long time to remember some stars.
