So I'll confess that pretty much the only reason I go on Tumblr is that I'm kind of obsessed with The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and I like to come on here to read stuff posted by the LBD cast & crew and the fans. In turn, the majority of the stuff I post is LBD related as well, because, what else am I gonna do? So, anyway, the reason I'm explaining so much for this one post is that this one video has a rather involved back story, so here we go.
A couple weeks ago I discovered that Mary Kate Wiles, who plays Lydia Bennet on the LBD is a huge fan of Lord of the Rings. I mean, like, a SERIOUS fan. She has a LotR map skirt and everything. It kind of reminded me of back around 15 years ago (I'm dating myself) when I read The Hobbit and LotR for the first time, and I kind of got obsessed with Tolkien. I read his other writings. I was already very much into linguistics, so I read up on his invented languages. And this was only a couple years before the films came out, so when they did, I just became even more obsessed.
Anyway, at the time I was writing a lot of orchestral music. I found some audio online of Tolkien reading one of his poems in Quenya (Elvish), and got inspired to put music behind it. So I composed something epic and put Tolkien's audio right over it. The product was the music for this video.
Flash forward 15 years, and now MK Wiles (and The Hobbit film) has me thinking about Tolkien again. I suddenly remembered this bit of music I had composed. I pulled it off my old hard drive and listened to it. I thought, hey, why not create a video for this?
So I did, and this video is the product. It's Tolkien's poem with all three versions--original Tengwar (Elvish) script, phonetic version, and English translation--overlapped. I hope anyone who hears it enjoys it. And if Mary Kate happens to stumble upon this, I just want to thank her for inspiring me to make it. This video is dedicated to her.
