I first thought when I heard what mal's abilities are that they would work in a lydia martin banshee sense kind of way. And that him being that connected could turn into a potential story arc of understanding how the different magic in the grishaverse work. Or like being in a fight connected to everything and then being able to feel when someone dies. But that didnt happen.
uhhhhmmm, but the latter isn’t actually wrong, he is technically connected to the world itself, that’s why can track so well, he can basically sense life and it’s also why is he so hard to kill
tbh, the amplifiers and their “powers” are one of the most interesting parts of the lore (aside of the politics but that’s just me) and it’s criminally underused and underexplained and, from what i know about the books, also underexplored.
mal being a living amplifier, a human but not grisha, is rare as much as darkling - he is literally one of the most interesting characters in the saga but everyone is sitting on their butts because alina glows, i mean, okay, but i’m different

I think in the show I wanted to see mal meeting some fjerdans who talk shit about the grisha and being like ok guess I have to protect alina against this shit now as well. Also I wanted him to meet other grisha to get more into his headspace about the first army/second army and grisha/non grisha relationship outside of generals and in the viewpoint of a foot soldier.
i’m sure meeting more people is coming in season 2. don’t get me on meeting other grisha tho, i feel we were still robbed on the mal/zoya front and zoya in general.
but like yeah, the first army/second army is barely explained, i’d love to see more of that

He acts like it’s all about Alina but he’s telling him to give up on her while holding him captive, as if he didn’t already have all the power in this situation and it’s only when he finds out mal escapes that he gives the order to kill like what was he gonna do keeping mal captive....I kind of love the idea of this all powerful Grisha whose lives for centuries now being attracted to and subconsciously protective over this hot young tracker because his skill, competence and determination has been keeping him alive not to mention he’s stupidly loving and brave even in the face of a danger like darkling

the thing about darkling on this matter, is that i don’t think it’s conscience descision. like he sees the similarities with luda and mal, he is not blind, it’s not something he can ignore but just simply doesn’t know how to deal with it. this “i-know-it-all” is an act. well practiced act but still an act.
he goes to see mal to make this, uhm, alpha move, to tell him he can’t have alina. he says alina she can’t have mal. the moron is running in circles because he could not keep luda, and it stuck with him. she was his breaking point, so...? it’s smart/fair/considerate/vangeful/tactical if he does the same to mal and alina? he could kill mal and create that breaking point for alina and be done with it but he doesn’t. he is looking for excuses to keep mal alive - to control alina - which was proven him wrong, time and time again. them together are nothing but trouble. and. yet.
Darkling reading gushy love poems between mal and Alina and feeling like he can’t be THAT great, then meeting him face to face and immediately going: oh no he’s hot
