i find this so interesting as a collector of many types of dolls bc in my experience the more expensive -> the less plastic and even decoration in the packaging. illustration below (grabbed pullip/rh pics from online bc my few pullip boxes are in storage)

(asian) bjd's come in cloth sleeping bags/pillows/etc inside cardboard boxes. poppy parker came in a carboard box tied with threads to a card. pullips come in a carboard box with a plastic window attached with plastic and wires to a card. rainbow highs come in a plastic contraption attached to a plastic card using plastic and wires and more plastic and it's all razor sharp and evil and wants you hurt.

idk man obviously these are vastly different pricepoints but a better world is possible! can we try using thread and ribbon instead of plastic plastic plastic and wire! can we try cardboard!

The practical reason is that it’s hard to mass produce bjds. They are resin cast by hand in batches limited to the lifetime of the mold, which eventually deteriorates, making it pretty limited edition. BJD companies tend to go in and out of business as the artist runs out of resources or can’t make enough sales or doesn’t have enough time to cast or assemble orders.

It’s a little like commenting that etsy stores don’t have see-thru plastic packaging for their products, here. But mostly bjds are heavy and breakable and artist commissions and have to be packaged well to make sure they don’t break in transit.

As for pvc anime figures I think it’s hard to package expensive figures well if there is a plastic see-thru section, that means it’s vulnerable to any pressure there but probably sells better on a rack.

i show $1600 worth of carboard and get dollsplained. 🧍‍♀️

i'm just pointing out a possibility for packaging re-designs damn

also volks is about as close to mass producing bjds (and vinyl dolls) and they also use cardboard shoe box packaging so 🤷‍♀️

remind me later when i feel less shitty to take pics but re: the amount of plastic on doll/toy/collectible packaging - i think it’s interesting that the more expensive you go the more it’s just cardboard again. bjds come in big relatively plain shoeboxes whereas rainbow high uses as much plastic as possible on the box and on binding the doll to the box

I know I just restating the point of that post but respecting religious freedom will sometimes require you to respect someone's belief that religious beliefs are categorically untrue, and there are a lot of people who are unable to handle this, and even more people who think they agree with this but haven't really grappled with what it means.

Something that a lot of religious folks don't seem to realize the extent to which non-religious people, more than any other religious minority, are expected to walk on eggshells around other people's beliefs at the expense of their own for the sake of social decorum, in a way which no one else is expected to do with theirs.

To name a bit of an example I have personal experience with. When I was mourning my cousin a couple years ago, I was constantly faced with the situation of people trying to comfort me from a religious perspective.

And whenever this topic comes up, the conversation is always about how "you have to be mindful of their intentions, they're trying to reach out to you and comfort you in the way they know, they're being nice, you have to appreciate the effort they're making, you have to meet them where they're at and appreciate their attempt to help you". Which is what I did, of course. In this situation, replying to their attempt to comfort you with any reminder that you don't believe in this stuff is considered a big social faux-pas that will make you look like an asshole. And to an extent I agree, it can be rude and needlessly combative.

But somethin I feel it's conspicuously absent from any conversation surrounding this type of situation like. Any interrogation of *why* is going "sorry, I don't believe in any of this, this means nothing to me" considered a bigger social faux-pas than trying to comfort a grieving person with religious beliefs you know they don't hold.

Why, even when you're literally grieving, the onus is on you as a non-religious person to be mindful of other's worldviews and tread lightly and meet them where they're at and not contradict what they believe in and never the other way around.
