I'm Eefa and I talk to strangers. She/her. Irish.

when i was 14 i came out to a highschool teacher as transgender and i believe i was the first transgender person he ever talked to, and i suppose he panicked, because all he did was say "i think you should listen to little lion man by mumford and sons," and i did, and it changed my 14 year old mind, but i am still unsure what his intended message. he was cool with me being transgender though.

"No idea what to say about the transgender stuff, but I heard a banger the other day you might like."

I love questionnaires that are clearly written with the assumption that anyone taking them has probably already self-diagnosed to the point that every question is so forer-effect-y that the idea of answering “no, this doesn’t describe me” is ludicrously funny

I love loud, unexpected noises and I do nothing to avoid being upsetting situations. When I am stressed out and overwhelmed I shine a bright light into my eyes and hit myself with a brick. I have no opinion one way or the other about the people I love being in pain.

when my plans are foiled I come instantly

"Listen," one guard said, "I know we have only just met-"

"No," the other guard said, "we've worked together for years!"

"-but you can trust me when I say-"

"I can't, you have the curse that's opposite from mine!"

"I don't care for you at all."

"Well, I… oh… I love you too."

the fact that richard sees/wants us to see judy poovey as sort of dumb, while also seeing/wanting us to see julian morrow as some revolutionary mind when they're having the same damn thoughts is crazy to me

like near the end of the first chapter when we hear some about the class discussion, one of the points julian discusses (in simple terms lol) is how people who tend to bottle things up and stay composed all the time end up causing greater amounts of destruction when they "lose control" than people who allow themselves to lose control on occasion, but he does it with many words and references

and richard is like "wow this is awesome how sick is this guy"

then at the beginning of chapter two, judy poovey is telling richard about the time henry beat the fuck out of spike romney and she says something about how when uptight people lose it they REALLY lose it, but in terms just as simple as those

and richard just goes "yeah, i guess"

which there for sure is something to be said about the way people use words and the difference that use of language has on the way people feel about certain concepts, but you know

Anything interesting to say about annabelle cane?

Annabelle Cane has, by default, ended up as one of the most complex, layered, and interesting characters in the narrative--and I am pretty sure it was done completely by accident by the writer.

Now, why do I say this? Because, TMA is a story that from the very start invests in the theme of, well, the passage and preservation of information. Then, it makes Annabelle specifically the single character who has taken charge of how every single piece of information we get in the podcast is edited and framed.

And specifically, it is Annabelle, the individual, who edits and frames the show. Not the Web working through her. Why do I know this? Because when she is referring to herself as merely a part of the Web in the statement she writes in MAG 196, she uses "we"--

An opening into, we believe, other worlds than this tired old thing.
It was not wide enough to allow true passage, not yet, save for the odd accident. But it was wide enough for what we now intended…

--But when she talks about the decision to use tape recorders as opposed to a TV show, she uses "I."

MAG 197

MARTIN
Oh. Wonderful. I can’t wait to attend the Annabelle Cane Show.
ANNABELLE
Huh! You know, I did consider it once.
MARTIN
Excuse me?
ANNABELLE
A TV show.

So Annabelle is--herself, as an individual--responsible for the medium through which we hear the story, and thus implicitly responsible for choosing what information gets kept and what information gets thrown out. This means that, although Annabelle only directly appears in a few episodes, we can read her schemes, aesthetic, and preferences into every single episode and every single cut.

For example--Melanie talks about multiple people telling her to "be fair to Jon." Logically speaking, she probably isn't lying or projecting. Martin, Daisy, Basira, and Georgie would likely have taken this stance against her at different points. Georgie canonically spoke up in Jon's favor to Melanie offscreen in the beginning, Basira was supportive to Jon's in s3, Daisy was supportive to Jon in s4, and Martin is Martin.

But we don't hear anyone say this to Melanie. Which means that Annabelle deliberately left out every single conversation where this happened.

Why? There are a lot of different possible answers--maybe because Jon listens to all the tapes, and Annabelle wanted to give him a certain perspective on his companions. Maybe because she's simply decided those conversations are unnecessary. But whatever the answer it is, it is about Annabelle and her specific choices/values/preferences.

That choice may very well be about manipulating the narrative Jon gets, how he sees the world around him--but if you look closely, not every choice is about that.

Another example: the s3 and s4 finales are clearly edited and spliced together from multiple tapes. Annabelle could have just recorded from multiple sets of tapes and then had them play one after another. But instead, scenes from entirely different locations are spliced together back to back. I can't think of a practical reason to do this, but I can think of artistic reasons. Annabelle doesn't just edit based on necessity and manipulation, it seems. She takes the material and cuts and puts parts of it together purely for the aesthetic value of it.

Annabelle is thus implicitly in every single episode of the show. Her taste and her choices are the very lens through which all of the information in the show is presented to us. Everything from three of Jon's stalking victims not being caught on tape before Jess Tyrell, to the tape recorders turning on and then off specifically to catch Jon saying fuck--it's her. It's all her.

And you know, there is a kind of poignancy to that. Annabelle, as I noticed in a previous post of mine, is utterly self effacing in her goals. She doesn't care if she lives or dies by Jon's hand. Only the continued survival of the Web matters. So Annabelle is a charming, funny, intensely creative, and highly theatrical woman whose individuality is deliberately disregarded. She interacts with almost no one over the course of a story that she's directing, seems to have no desires that are about herself, and no one ever expresses curiosity about her as an individual. But we see her individuality in her work. Her retro aesthetic, her sense of humor, her keen eye for manipulation and shaping a narrative.

I keep having an image of her sitting alone at Hill Top Road, splicing together tape after tape, cutting and listening and then cutting again. Indulging herself by leaving in those little moments of humor or drama or switching things on just to hear Jon swearing. Because she doesn't get to express her individuality any other way.

She also makes sure her own introductory episode is number 69.

FUCK. SHE SURE DID.

Can't stand all those posts that are like "what if there was a story about monarchy where the monarch was good actually." commit to the bit of the horrors of feudalism or die

"What if the king's true passion was trying to end peasant starvation" "what if the queen worked herself to the bone trying to help people and her people loved her" "what if the monarch wasn't classist or imperialistic" man I don't read fantasy stories about monarchy to see models of good strategies for governance. show them killing people who don't deserve it for no reason and then being assassinated for being a tyrant or I'm not interested

story about a gaeltacht vampire who is worried about rural depopulation because it reduces access to blood but flat out refuses to move to a city so is setting up summer courses to lure in the learners and tourists

when english speakers move to the village he gives them like. a month or two to get started on their irish and if they don't, he eats them

they have the best roads in the region and it's because he keeps applying for grants and shit to keep the village afloat. he's great at grant applications. roadsigns though not so much. he likes it when a few of the tourists get lost

he's actually really supportive of the learners on the summer course. he's really good at teaching grammar in a way that's compelling and helpful. people come back year after year and bring their friends, which is, obviously, precisely what he was aiming for

obviously all the locals know he's a vampire and they talk about it all the time when he's not listening. they're just not gonna do anything to make him leave when he's bringing in that sweet sweet cash. plus he does have lovely irish and he's great fun at a session. never sings before midnight but once he does, nobody's leaving until the pub closes

he always teaches "haigh" or just straight in with a "caidé mar atá tú" as greetings. the strength's mostly gone out of your classic "Dia duit" these days but you never know when you're gonna get a proper believer in class and it makes him itchy. he tells them it's needlessly formal and they sound weird and it's mostly fine but sometimes he does need to go and have a bit of a lie down about it

my favorite bit of "rich people are Like That" ephemera that I picked up from my Russian literature binge was from a noble character who was complaining about his serfs neglecting their duties, specifically the duty of staying up all night long slapping the pond water in order to prevent the frogs from croaking so that the nobleman could enjoy his sleep at his country estate with its adorable pond. whenever I hear wealthy people's complaints in this day and age the majority of it automatically filters to "the fucking serfs won't slap the pond anymore and it's honestly so destructive and cruel of them to deny me my beauty sleep like this" type statements

the one thing that pisses me off about House of Leaves is that that play where the Minotaur is actually a disabled and disfigured son locked up in the labyrinth, as sweet and intelligent as he is despairing, focusing on King Minos slowly realizing his son has never been the problem and that this child he scorned as a beast is the most human a being can be, and just as he was on the verge of figuring out how to undo his own lies and bring his son into the sunlight, he doomed his son to death at the hands of a drunken thug proclaiming to look for glory, isn't real. it's not a real play! wha tthe fuck!!!!

The Simpsons should end already so a bunch of people who used to watch it but don’t anymore watch the finale, which then triggers an extremely specific group of people with extremely specific things wrong with them get weird about it. I would like to see that. Gif sets. People posting favorite quotes. People being like oh yikes yikes yikes I knew some of this wasn’t going to age well but damn. A 20k Moe/Milhouse fanfic that launches a shipping juggernaut.Tumblr user springinspringfield with shaking hands types up a three thousand word post on how Bart Simpson was always written to be trans coded. And I wanna read that post and be like “yup argument checks out” and incorporate it into my sincerely held belief system
