Sterling looked around the corner and when he was sure the coast was clear he started running.
“Sterling James! Get back here!”
Dammit! Coast wasn’t clear at all. His mother had seen him. He tried to pretend he hadn’t heard her, he kept going. He made it across the street before he was hit in the back of the head with something hard. And metal. He lost his momentum and fell face first onto the ground. He took a minute to regain his breath which had been knocked out of him before trying to sit up. He rubbed his head vigorously and looked around trying to see what had hit him. He saw it rolling off the curb and into the street. A can of peas. Fuck, his mother was getting good. That can made it twice as far as the last one had. He stood up and winced as a twinge of pain ricocheted in his head. He glared at the can of peas. He hoped the damn thing got run over by a car.
“Did you really think I’d let you run away from me?”
Sterling sighed. It really wasn’t the peas fault. They were just an innocent bystander in all of this. The real culprit was the woman standing in front of him. It never ceased to amaze Sterling how determined this little slip of a woman could be. She may not have his speed but she didn’t need it with her creativity.
“I’d hoped.”
“What was that?” His mother glared and he rubbed his head.
“Nothing.”
She put her hands on her hips. “Sterling James that better not be sass I hear.”
“No maam. I wouldn’t dream of it.”
She nodded and bent over to scoop up the peas.
I love this! Absolutely. I have no idea why he was running, but I love this. Sterling is my baby, and I totally feel his pain.
(This short was based on a real event between my mom mom and my dad. Although not as epic.)
