#new york city. the sun is hiding underneath the horizon. its a frigid tuesday morning.#im walking upwind. my frosty breath puffs out and back into my face. i take off my sunglasses for now.#im exhausted from last night. a whole lot of work that might’ve gone to waste…#i swaddle deeper into my thick trenchcoat. my pockets keep my hands warm. my boots clack against the concrete at CPR rhythm.#i turn the corner and turn up the music now that the wind blows against my ear. need the music to keep myself from shivering#im starting to regret taking the long way to work… but i have to see it. someone told me people saw it. i need to know what people think.#a few more steps past fashion boutiques and nail salons… and an opening in the city block. a courtyard#at its center is a christmas tree#strewn with festive lights and tinsel and ornaments. at its top is a statue of goku with his arms toward the sky#the tree’s already 8 meters tall; a few more feet and - hung by clothesline from parallel fire exits - a basketball sized blue orb. it glows#the tree has a base filled with sand. nobody can sabotage it#on pa speakers surrounding the tree (they were here already)#i got permission from the city to play a setlist of christmas music. i kept it classic#now it’s playing ‘have yourself a merry little christmas’ - frank sinatra#some fat meatball has set up shop selling hot chocolate. a few more are gathered nearby#a few adults. alone. swaddled into themselves. i dont blame them.#a handful of couples as well. one pair dances. arms around each other in a gentle revolution.#a few are chatting but most have parked on the concrete benches circling the tree#… theres hardly a dozen in total. and no kids. its barely 6am… i suppose…#they enjoy themselves… but its no party. triple the amount of people walk by the courtyard every minute. few even stop to look at the tree.#ahhhhh….. oh well!#i go up to the hot cocoa cart and i ord- 5 bucks?! five fucking dollars? christ. this city… i caugh it up anyway. the cups small. whatever!#at least he’s made it with milk. and gave plenty of mini marshmellows with no charge#i sip…. oh wow. okay. five bucks? wow.#its so viscous it nearly covers my teeth. hits every taste bud. it thaws whatever parts of my belly have been frozen since i woke up.#i sit and peoplewatch. more enter. the number doubles. not everyone who passes visits….#but the ones who stop and sit for a moment… they look happy. they feel brighter. you cant see the sunrise but you feel it#i stand up and walk back to the sidewalk. the boss wont be happy if im late. but id soak in the christmas tree light all day if i could.’#but then… wouldn’t it stop being special if it were yours alone?#fin
