There are two things that have been in the forefront of my thoughts about Amsterdam. The first I’ve written about- the insanity of so many people thinking lynch mobs out to hunt Jews is an acceptable response to a few asshole Israelis.

But the second? This dude and our reaction to him. Like. Collectively.

There’s this idea that’s absolutely rampant about Jews- that we hate Arabs (also I think this guy is Druze, but the people who think we hate Arabs don’t really care about those distinctions). Mizrahi Jews included, by the way. They’re simultaneously calling us Arabs while telling us we’re violently racist. That’s a mind fuck.

And obviously- obviously- there’s racism in every place, in every group.

But did you guys notice your reaction to this dude? The knee shaking gratefulness? I thought I was just hit by it hard- but looking at the reaction here and on social media in general, seems like it’s many of us.

We’re so goddamn grateful when any non Jew reaches out a hand. We’re so very, very thankful. We’re MORE thankful than if they were Jewish.

I think we’re so used to being insular- to knowing that nobody else is coming to help- that when someone does, it hits us particularly hard. We’re the kid in the corner of the lunchroom just flabbergasted that someone else sat down with us.

At least say "I am uncomfortable with" instead. Own your own shit

"This person is making me uncomfortable" suggests they're actively doing something to or at you. And sometimes people are! But sometimes. You are just uncomfortable with people when they aren't doing anything. And that's on you not them.

"The homeless man on the bus is making me uncomfortable" verses "I am uncomfortable with the homeless man on the bus." You see the difference
