Tony “The Mood” Stark
“Playing the role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.”
is this not what happened
you’re certainly not wrong
Clint: thanos snapped half of the universe. So I’m gonna kill the other people remaining.
Natasha, internally:
another thing that annoys me is the whole “nah the thing is only good because RDJ is playing himself” like no bro RDJ is a real person who is playing tony stark, a fictional character he probably relates to in some level so he’s able to bring a special something to the role. RDJ is an iron man comics nerd RDJ walks around wearing vintage iron man t-shirts RDJ peppered comic references in his improvised lines RDJ tried to push for specific comic arcs RDJ has brought up specific iron man issues during interviews i am about 96% sure that RDJ secretly wants to fight people who diss iron man canon
@rockandroll45 listen off the top of my head:
- in IM1 tony calls his company “stark international” and in IM2 he calls it “stark enterprises” even though its official name in the MCU is stark industries. stark international & enterprises are both separate stark corporate entities distinct from each other and distinct from stark industries that appear at distinct points in the comics.
- these references are kind of masterfully placed too, because in the comics stark international (mentioned in IM1) becomes stane international after stane basically scams tony out of it, and stark enterprises (mentioned in IM2) is one tony builds from the ground up after losing everything during his alcoholic relapse arc (the party scene in IM2 was supposed to be a reference to 616 tony’s alcoholism – RDJ wanted to adapt the “demon in a bottle” arc but the powers that be decided it was too dark for the movie)
- RDJ gets a lot of credit for supposedly adlibing tf out of his IM1 scenes so it’s hard for me to say which lines are RDJ and which lines were written by somebody else, but at the very least, at “I know in my heart that its right” i feel like his emphasis on “my heart” has got to be some type of acknowledgment of the fact that the iron man canon preceding the movies was nothing if not a pile of tony stark heart metaphors
- RDJ had been pushing for maria stark flashbacks since IM3 and i stg if he was the one who picked the “mr softee” t-shirt he’s wearing in the cap 3 flashback (the costume designer of cap 3 said that RDJ had input in his costume choices) then there’s no way this isn’t a reference to the fact that 616 tony’s entire childhood was about being shamed for crying and being “sensitive” and a “softie” (he was sent to boarding school because his dad wanted him to learn “the value of iron” because tony was too “weak,” “stark men are made of iron” etc)
- we have RDJ to thank for tony’s Cool Cap 3 Wristwatch Repulsor and
cool wristwatches are a historically awesome iron man thing
- RDJ was the one who suggested the cap 3 confrontation between tony and ms spencer (he’s also the one who brought in the actress, alfre woodard). in the civil war comics, tony is similarly confronted/held responsible by a grieving mother demanding justice for the death of her son in the stamford explosion (the event that triggered civil war in the comics)
- according to the russos, they would meet with RDJ once a week to discuss/rewrite the RDJ scenes that would be shot that week. given that and RDJ’s long-standing track record as a pepper/tony fan, i’m pretty sure RDJ’s at least partially responsible for the dialog with FRIDAY – “i always pictured you as a redhead” “you must be thinking of someone else” “must be” – which is the first explicit MCU reference to the “tony stark likes redheads” comic trope, and i think it’s a deliberate reference here because pepper had already gone blonde since IM2
this is what’s coming to mind rn. tl; dr RDJ is a fucking iron man nerd and people need to stop dismissing the specific care/time/thought/research/effort he puts into the character by saying he’s just drawing everything from his own experience and personality
#it’s one of those things where the dismissiveness goes both ways#either RDJ is a terrible person#who stans too much for his character#by doing his job#and not phoning it in by allowing shit characterization and shoddy arcs#or you know#saying YES when the studio begs him to do CW because Marvel has been in a Civil War circle jerk for 10 years#and they couldn’t do it without his character#but then the same people act like the work that goes into that character#isn’t work at all#pretending it isn’t even acting at all#and they ignore that not only#is there spectacular acting put into that work#such that even critics who frequently dismiss these movies out of hand are raving#but also ignoring the constant stream of comics-fan love letters#RDJ sends to the fandom in his portrayal#seeing as many of the detractors are people who dislike the character in all incarnations and who tend to have#shaky grasps on the canon of the character when it doesn’t suit their tendentious readings#it’s probably not surprising#but it’s always hilarious to see the two diametrically opposed opinions#espoused by the same people#– how dare RDJ care about the character and stan for him (in the way they adore when it’s sebstan or hiddleston or evans)#but also he’s not really acting at all#and also wouldn’t it be great if he’d just gtfo out of the movies#that wouldn’t even exist had his performances not helped create this market in the first place#Certainly that doesn’t mean you have to like him but the narrative that what he’s doing isn’t acting (via @flange5)
wowowowowowowow
Reason why Tony had consistent characterisation over the last 11 years
Some woke director or writer: How about we—
RDJ:
M&M and the Russos: so tony is a narcissist with a big ego right-
