@tristampparty Anniversary Day 8: Rem Saverem
11/23 is good big brother day in japan (11/23 = ii nii-san) so, with that, after one and a half months of working on this, i present my very self-indulgent scenario of vash and knives being brothers and taking that first step to heal.
if you want to throw some support my way i have a higher-res pdf version on my ko-fi shop for $3 - no pressure obviously, this will remain free to read here on my blog indefinitely!
also i would like to give a quick thank you to @/nimpnawakproduction for their references on vash's scars which were pretty much my bible when drawing this LMAO

Happy Birthday Tatsuya!
Main motivator for learning anatomy = being able to draw my naked boys (OH my god I accidentally gave Wolfwood 3 hands in pic 2 and had to edit that out...badly. Whoops!)

vash my beloved 🥺
Now, we all know Knives picked up Legato on a whim. But his expression upon seeing the utter emptiness in Legato's eyes makes it irrefutable that there was some other reasoning behind why he decided to listen to that whim.
Legato was likely the first human who did not respond with fear or hate to Knives threatening their life. Instead, Legato looks at him with gratefulness. A silent "thank you, for freeing me from my suffering."
Knives did not spare his life out of pity. Pity is not the right word for it. It was a whim, yes, but that whim stemmed from whatever emotion Knives felt upon seeing that expression.
He saw that Legato was a lot like the plants he was trying so desperately to save— abused by the humans to the point where his life prior to be meeting Knives cannot even be called a life. Perhaps, even though Legato was a human, he did not see a human in that moment. He did not see the cruel beings he despised so vehemently. He saw a pitiful, vulnerable, creature. He saw something that resembled what he wanted to save.
im too tired rn to go reference anything and im just writing this from bed but the girls mean a lot to vash. when theyre cleaning up the puppet mess on the seeds ship, he tells them that he wants to show them something. he's been waiting to tell them all about it.
wolfwood isnt involved in this scene at all. he still gets to learn about vash's past, but it's in a different context from somebody else. i'm not saying that wolfwood means nothing in comparison, but i am saying that he didn't wait for wolfwood to catch up with them before taking the girls on a field trip.
vash shows meryl and milly the cold sleep chamber because he wants to. this is such an important part of his identity and memory. anybody who has read this story should know what the cold sleep chamber means to him. (even in tristamp, vash as a character is introduced in this part of the ship).
this is as close as he ever gets to telling anybody about who he is or where he came from out of his own mouth.
id say the girls are so important to him. he cares about them and trusts them.
