I think the misconception that Fenris hates all mages (with Hawke as the only exception) comes from the fact that the developers decided to make the two main mage companions both be people that Fenris has every reason to distrust and fear.

Merrill is a blood mage, and he has literally never met a blood mage who wasn’t completely evil and also a SLAVE OWNER. He has every reason to expect that her use of blood magic will lead to terrible things whether on purpose or not.

Anders is literally possessed and isn’t in complete control over his own actions at times. Being wary of what he might do in that scenario is completely fucking reasonable (and I say that as someone who likes Anders) ESPECIALLY when you take into consideration Anders’ open admiration of Tevinter.

But, if you take a look at Bethany (who is neither possessed nor a blood mage) you find that Fenris gets along with her fairly easily and outright states that he is fine with her because he doesn’t think she would ever give into the temptation of hurting others.
