It’s Not Just Farmers—U.S. Exports May Never Recover From the Trade War

The Trump administration’s trade war is ravaging exports to China across the U.S. and well beyond the farm belt, new data from the U.S. Commerce Department show.

More than 30 states stretching from Florida to Alaska suffered double-digit drops in merchandise exports to China through September of this year. 

• Texas, fell 39% where oil and gas products comprise the largest export to that country.
• In Alabama, which touts its status as the No. 3 auto-exporting state in the U.S., total shipments to China plunged 49%. 
• Florida’s merchandise sales to the country slumped 40%
• West Virginia saw drops of about 25%.  
• Wisconsin saw drops of about 25%. 

Product exports to China from the U.S. as a whole dropped 15% to $78.8 billion.

Exports to China support more than a million U.S. jobs, according to the U.S.-China Business Council, which represents American companies doing business in China.

Amid Trade Tensions, China Issues Travel Alert to Citizens About Dangers of US

U.S. asks China not to implement ban on foreign garbage

The United States asked China on Friday not to implement a ban on imports of scrap materials, after the world's top scrap buyer abruptly shut the door to many types of waste, throwing the global recycling industry into turmoil.

Reuters broke the news last July that China had told the World Trade Organization that it would stop accepting shipments of rubbish such as waste plastic and paper as part of a campaign against “foreign garbage”.

“China is seeking a path toward harmonization of man and nature,”

The U.S. Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries said at the time that the ban would devastate an industry that supported 155,000 jobs and had exported scrap worth $5.6 billion to China in 2016.

President Trump pushed forward with a two-pronged trade offensive this week, enacting tariffs on imported aluminum and steel on Friday, a day after announcing levies on up to $60 billion in Chinese goods. The target of both actions is China, a country that Mr. Trump has called “an economic enemy” of the United States. 

In addition to the tariffs, the US also plans to impose new investment restrictions, take action against China at the World Trade Organization and the Treasury Department also will propose additional measures.
