Parkland Student Survivors Brace For 1st Anniversary Of School Shooting

There will be no marching.

There will be no school walkouts.

Only a day of reflection and service and, perhaps most consequential, a time to grieve.

That is how many of the Parkland, Fla., survivors turned activists plan to spend Thursday, the first anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Seventeen students and staff members were gunned down last Valentine’s Day. Another 17 people were injured. Since the shooting, young Parkland survivors have emerged as the driving force in calling for stricter gun laws in the U.S. through a series of marches, school walkouts and voter registration drives.

On the heels of a week of unraveling, President Donald Trump capped it off by recommitting his loyalty to the National Rifle Association. Indeed, he paid a visit to the gun lobby’s annual conference on Friday, for the fourth consecutive year in a row. The visit marked his first remarks to the NRA since the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, in February which killed 17 people and spurred a national movement demanding tighter gun control laws in America.

“Thanks to your activism and dedication, you have an administration fighting to protect your Second Amendment and we will protect your Second Amendment,” he said on Friday. “Your Second Amendment rights are under siege, but they will never ever be under siege as long as I am your president.” [Such a narrator - speaks like a 4rth grader]. 

“We recognize a simple fact,” Trump added. “The one thing that has always stood between the American people’s Second Amendment right and those who want to take away those rights has been conservatives in Congress willing to fight for those rights. And we’re fighting. The Constitution cannot be changed by bureaucrats, judges, or the United Nations. That’s why we are appointing judges who will interpret the Constitution as it’s written.”
