“We has a lot to deal with. There were evidently some calls made to Espy supporters,” Espy told Roberts. “Most of them were older supporters. For example, I was told that one of them said that he was from a survey company, and then he asked her, ‘Was she going to vote?’ She said, ‘Yes.’ They asked her who she was going to vote for and she said, ‘Mike Espy.’ And she was proud to vote for Mike Espy. And then, allegedly, they told her she did not have to go on Tuesday, because her very acknowledgment over the telephone for me was actually a registered vote for me. She was smart enough to call our campaign. She was in Heidelberg, so we sent one of our lawyers to Heidelberg and we took her affidavit.”

Mississippi Gov. defends Hyde-Smith "public hanging" comment by calling African-American abortion "black genocide"

“Absolutely we have been sensitive to race relations in this state,” Bryant, who has been criticized for declaring April “Confederate Heritage Month,” said during a press conference held in conjunction with Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.

“Today I talked about the genocide of over 20 million African American children. See in my heart, I am confused about where the outrage is at about 20 million African American children that have been aborted. No one wants to say anything about that, no one wants to talk about that.”

Bryant first raised the topic of African-American abortion rates earlier Monday morning. “Look at African Americans,” he said. “According to Wikipedia, had those children not been aborted, the African American population would be 48 percent larger in America. Forty-eight percent larger. We can play with those numbers, and we can look at statistics, but the cold, grim truth is, children are being murdered.” Newsweek was unable to locate the Wikipedia article he referred to.

Associating African-American abortion rates with a “black genocide” is a well-known strategy of right-wing super PAC, Stars and Stripes Forever, which is closely associated with the white conservative John Philip Sousa IV, the great-grandson of marching music legend John Philip Sousa.

President Donald Trump has given Hyde-Smith his "complete and total endorsement." Governor Phil Bryant is also closely aligned with the president and has visited with him on numerous occasions.

The last execution by hanging in Mississippi occurred in 1940. The last alleged lynching by hanging in Mississippi occurred in 2018. 

Cindy Hyde-Smith was born in 1959. Public executions aren’t part of the history of Mississippi in her lifetime. Lynchings are.

To speak of “public hangings” in Mississippi is to evoke a long and brutal history of racial terror. To joke about it is to utter an obscenity.

Mississippi Senator’s ‘Public Hanging’ Remark Draws Backlash Before Runoff

Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, whose opponent is black, said she meant to convey respect, but a linguistics professor said the idiom had a negative connotation and fell out of use long ago.

The N.A.A.C.P. called the comments “sick” after a video of the exchange was posted on Twitter over the weekend, while Mike Espy, Ms. Hyde-Smith’s Democratic opponent, said, “It’s awful.”

Mr. Espy, who is black, and Ms. Hyde-Smith, who is white, are locked in a runoff after no candidate in a four-person race received more than 50 percent of the vote on Election Day. Ms. Hyde-Smith has made her ardent support of President Trump, who endorsed her, central to her campaign in a state that the president carried by nearly 18 points in 2016.

Many lynchings were not documented, most likely making the actual total much higher, according to scholars.
