The officer we are honoring today was killed because Donald Trump refused to concede, spread lies about our election, and called for an insurrection on Jan. 6th, aided and abetted by right wing media and mainstream republicans.
They are all complicit.

USA Downgraded from Democracy to Anocracy ("Part Democracy and Part Dictatorship")

Using the POLITY data series, The Center for Systemic Peace has downgraded the system of government of the United States of America from a democracy to an anocracy, a “regime that mixes democratic with autocratic features”. From a notice on the front page of the CSP website:

The USA has dropped below the “democracy threshold” (+6) on the POLITY scale in 2020 and and is now considered an anocracy (+5). It has also lost its designation as the world’s oldest, continuous democracy; that designation now belongs to Switzerland (171 years), followed by New Zealand (142) and the United Kingdom (139). Further degradation of democratic authority in the USA will trigger an Adverse Regime Change event.

The downgrade can be tied directly to the Trump administration’s actions over the past four years:

In 2019, CSP changed the USA code for Executive Constraints from 7 to 6 due to the executive’s systematic rejection of congressional oversight; dropping its POLITY score to +7 and resetting its DURABLE score to “0”. In 2020, the coding for Executive Constraints will fall another point or two due to the executive’s systematic purge of “disloyalists” from the administration, forceful response to protest, vilification of the main opposition parties; and undermining public trust in the electoral process, reducing the USA POLITY score in 2020 to +5 (anocracy).

Their analysis also places the US at “high risk of impending political instability (i.e., adverse regime change and/or onset of political violence)” and designates “the ongoing efforts of the USA executive to circumvent electoral outcomes and subvert democratic processes as an ‘attempted (presidential) coup’”.

Republican officials in federal, state and local governments are 100% complicit in dismantling democracy for their own authoritarian rule.

Republican hubris and lies gone wild. This kind of crap comes from religion and belief that prayer will save you; i.e., it makes the GOP lies more believable to believers.

The entire GOP plan is a shell game that violates the entire concept of insurance as risk sharing. Some die, but it’s cheaper for others.

Rep. Mo Brooks, Republican of Alabama, has done us the favor of openly stating what most Republicans in favor of repealing Obamacare believe. As Jonathan Chait summarizes, people who can’t afford the cost of their own medical care have nobody to blame but themselves.

Republicans usually defend their health-care position with an array of buzzwords like choice, patient-centric, or competition. In a CNN interview, Representative Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, makes the case for Trumpcare in much starker terms: It will free healthy people from having to pay the cost of the sick. “It will allow insurance companies to require people who have higher health care costs to contribute more to the insurance pool that helps offset all these costs, thereby reducing the cost to those people who lead good lives, they’re healthy, they’ve done the things to keep their bodies healthy,” explained Brooks. “And right now, those are the people who have done things the right way that are seeing their costs skyrocketing.”
It is certainly true that the Republican health-care plan will spur insurance companies to charge more money to people with expensive medical needs, and less to healthier people. (It will also transfer hundreds of billions of dollars from the poor, who will get reduced Medicaid and tax credits to buy insurance, to the rich, who will receive a large tax cut.) The idea that morality dictates healthy people pay less, and sick people more, has been floating around the margins of conservative health-care thought.

The central tenet of Republican thought is ‘everyone for themselves’. And heath is a morality play, where the healthy and wealthy are good, and the sick and poor are bad.

Meanwhile, the question that Jake Tapper was asking Mo Brooks was whether Trump doesn’t know the status of pre-existing conditions in the newest attempt at Trumpcare, or if Trump believes that allowing states to opt out of that restriction by setting up pre-existing condition pools satisfies his promises about protecting those with pre-existing conditions. We never got an answer, but I’m not sure if Trump knows what he means.
