“Everybody wants to be a beast until it’s time to do what beasts do.” - Mike Tyson
Truth!
Mike Tyson BOOM ! - Trains on The Pads Even With The Protection Those Punches Must Hurt don´t You Think?
On that second combination in the video - immediate defensive movement after he finishes with his hands. As soon as that final right hook lands, he ducks briefly, probably as a defense against erroneous blind responses.
Even in the pure defensive drill before that, when pads were swung at Tyson’s head - he kept ducking and moving diagonallg into the coach even when he had stopped working the pads.
Iron Mike was a great fight fighter, but I feel like people focus on his strength and animalistic aggression too much. When I started competing in boxing, it’s definitely something I tried to emulate. But credit has to be given to his footwork and defensive movement too: not only is it instinctive immediately after (to the point of nearly during) an offensive combination, but it’s fast and when he drills it, he drills it to the point where he feels like it would’ve been effective. He didn’t stop when his padholder stopped, he stopped when he felt he’d neutralised his opponents threat, and moved in tight enough to press them against the ropes to do some considerable damage.
His mentality towards his training (including the technical side of boxing, not just the physical) alongside his instinctive defensive nature are big staples of why I think he was an incredible boxer. His reputation for being a hard hitter gave him an advantage as some opponents wouldn’t see much past that - they would train to fight a brawler, rather than a methodical fighter. With this in mind, even someone who doesn’t box can watch some Tyson combos critically and see how tight and well executed they are.
I might write more on other elements of Iron Mike that made him great. He’s an amazing boxer and I think he needs more analysis than he gets beyond his bowling ball type biceps.
- Tyson uses his bob and weave and lateral movement to generate devastating power
- Tyson punches as hard in training as he does in a fight
- Tyson’s footwork is so smooth and lightening fast
- Tyson is THE BEAST
Mike Tyson, in his prime, was probably the scariest man on earth (at least I think so). So much speed. So much power. I’ve never seen a heavyweight who could move like he did.
