The U.S. Capitol Police evacuated the west front of the Capitol on Thursday after reported lightning strikes near the National Mall ahead of President Trump’s “Salute to America” July 4 event.
Weather was a concern in the Washington, D.C., area throughout Thursday in the run-up to the Fourth of July festivities on the National Mall, with rain rolling through periodically and more forecast throughout the night.

Hey fundamentalist Christians? Maybe you don’t give a shit about Donald Trump being a liar, a con artist, an adulterer, and a thief, but your god clearly does.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Republicans we know what you did on the 4th of July

“I’ve been pretty upfront that the election interference — as serious as that was, and unacceptable — is not the greatest threat to our democracy,” Sen. Ron Johnson said in an interview with the Washington Examiner published over the weekend. “We’ve blown it way out of proportion.”

Happy Independence Day

As we celebrate our nation’s independence and founding, it’s startling to think of all the usual, regular, steadfast people over the centuries that did their small but important part to build a new kind of country. As I stop at cemeteries in New England, I’ve been awestruck by the dates on ancient gravestones of these average citizens buried hundreds of years ago — all those unique stories, many lost to history. Yet local people tend to the upkeep of their community cemeteries in honorable ways. They take daily walks thru the lovely quiet of the place. So, it doesn’t feel as lonely as perhaps it could. It’s been profound to see how many tiny headstones there are pre-20th century, how families suffered the loss of so many children. At Old North Parish Church Cemetery in St. George, Maine, I stopped and saw graves from back to the 1700’s. I believe there are some from even the 1600’s. We have many ways we can mark this day, and today I do so by paying respect to those like us, the regular folk, who made America.

A reminder of what Patriotism and being an American really means. Love Has NO Labels

While the vast majority of Americans consider themselves unprejudiced, many of us unintentionally make snap judgments about people based on what we see - whether it’s race, age, gender, religion, sexuality, or disability. The Love Has No Labels campaign challenges us to open our eyes to our implicit, or unconscious, bias and work to stop it in ourselves, our families, our friends, and our colleagues. Rethink your bias at www.lovehasnolabels.com.
