Danai Gurira attends the ‘Black Panther’ London Premiere I’m a big advocate for women and girls and for them reaching their fullest potential in this world and not being hindered from that. And what I think is fantastic about Wakanda is that it actually portrays a world where that is the case. Hence you have women like Nakia and women like Okoye and women like Shuri and they’re able to be full, complex, fascinating human beings, while at the same time being women. They’re able to be fierce and feminine. They’re able to be all these things that this world messes with women about and makes us have to parse out who we are in ways that’s a waste of time and energy. Meanwhile, the world is losing out on the potential we have inside us. So to actually be able to portray a character that really throws all that mess on its head… All our female characters might be saying to the world, “Hey, maybe it’s time we stop giving women so much pushback on them just being themselves and making their own choices and let’s try a world that way.“ And if there’s any little girl or grown woman who feels any resonance in this that feels right to them, and makes them feel a little bit more powerful and a little bit more validated, that’s all that matters.
