Trumpian propaganda! Ignorance is Strength

Staffers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) service responsible for helping American farmers with conservation efforts were instructed by top officials to avoid the term "climate change" shortly after President Donald Trump took office, according to emails (pdf) obtained by the Guardian.
"It has become clear one of the previous administration's priorities is not consistent with that of the incoming administration. Namely, that priority is climate change," Bramblett wrote.
Less than a month after Bramblett's email, NRCS staffer Tim Hafner sent him a report draft, and said: "I would like to know the correct terms I should use instead of Climate Changes and anything to do with Carbon….I want to ensure to incorporate correct terminology that the agency has approved to use."
Later that same day, Hafner sent an updated version, asking Bramblett to "please review this and make sure there is no problems with any wording," and noting that he "utilized the report that Bianca previously provided."
Bianca Moebius-Clune, director of the NRCS's Soil Health Division, had sent Hafner "a list of what to avoid, and what to replace it with, as well as concepts/messages that will be neutral or positively seen."

In the guide provided by Moebius-Clune, employees are instructed:

  • Rather than "climate change," use the term "weather extremes";
  • Rather than "climate change adaption," use "resilience to weather extremes/intense weather events: drought, heavy rain, spring ponding";
  • Rather than "reduce greenhouse gases," use "build soil organic matter, increase nutrient use efficiency";
  • Rather than "sequester carbon," use "build soil organic matter."

  • Staff for the United States Department of Agriculture have been instructed by a senior staffer to avoid using the phrase “climate change,” according to a report in the Guardian.
  • According to a series of internal emails from the USDA obtained by the outlet, Bianca Moebius-Clune, director of soil health for the Natural Resources Conservation Society of the USDA, instructed her staff to swap out politically charged phrases like “climate change” for “weather extremes” and “reduce greenhouse gasses” for “build soil organic matter, increase nutrient use efficiency.” Read more (8/7/17)

Trump and Republican inaction for the sake of fossil fuel jobs! Doom

“As if it wasn’t shocking enough to see three consecutive record-breaking years, in 2014, 2015, and 2016, for the first time on record ... we’re now seeing near-record temperatures even in the absence of the El Nino ‘assist’ that the previous record year benefited from.”

I think Buzzfeed has this one wrong! True, it’s one of the strangest climate stories of 2017. I think the trip was more about exploiting natural resources that are exposed to drilling and mining. I highly doubt Smith took the committee to Greenland to see melting glaciers as a primary purpose. Why keep it secret? Minerals, oil, and gas.

Smith, as you know, is captured by the Koch brothers and oil and gas interests of his state (’regulatory capture’ is when an agency is “captured” by the industry it is supposed to regulate. In this and in many cases in US government, the Dept of Energy, Dept of State, Dept of Interior, and Environmental Protection Agency, are led by industry funded staffers. Quite amazing that there are few laws that prevent this from occurring. Lamar Smith is heavily subsidized by oil and gas interests).

Anyway, Congress is in charge of several committees that impact how US Agencies are managed and funded. While they don’t have direct control over the Agencies, the Committees do have substantial influence over their budgets, agendas, and missions.

The House Science Committee is chaired by Lamar Smith, a famous denier of basic science and an vocal proponent for the oil and gas industry. He regularly repeats talking points provided by industry. This is the swamp that Trump promised to drain, but is instead filling up biggly.

Anyway, Smith led a team to Greenland! Greenland is covered in ice, and it is melting very fast due to accelerated warming. Greenland is responsible for the majority of sea level rise occurring around the globe. This is good news on its face, HOWEVER I suspect he was more interested in the prospects for new minerals, natural gas exploration, new shipping routes, and expanded fisheries.

Buzzfeed needs to find Smith’s meeting schedule before, during, and after his visit to Greenland. I bet he met with oil, gas, and mining companies.

As Greenland melts, land is exposed for people to explore. It turns out that Greenland has MASSIVE Rare Earth Mineral deposit on Earth (see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GVJpw0cRX8U).  There is also uranium, gold, zinc, and natural gas. As glaciers melt on and around Greenland, it becomes easier for huge companies to dig and drill. My gut tells me this trip is more about exploiting natural resource exploration for US companies than anything else.

When Trump and Corporatocracy loses, America and the Earth Wins.

A federal appeals court in Washington has ruled that the head of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) overstepped his authority in trying to delay implementation of a new rule requiring oil and gas companies to monitor and reduce methane leaks.
The American Petroleum Institute, the Texas Oil and Gas Association and other industry groups had petitioned Pruitt to scrap the requirement, which had been set to take effect in June.
"This ruling declares EPA's action illegal - and slams the brakes on Trump Administration's brazen efforts to put the interests of corporate polluters ahead of protecting the public and the environment," said David Doniger, director of climate and clean air program for the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Excerpt:

A new paper published in the Journal of Climate reveals that the lower part of the earth’s atmosphere has warmed much faster since 1979 than scientists relying on satellite data had previously thought.
Researchers from Remote Sensing Systems (RSS), based in California, have released a substantially revised version of their lower tropospheric temperature record.
After correcting for problems caused by the decaying orbit of satellites, as well as other factors, they have produced a new record showing 36 percent faster warming since 1979 and nearly 140 percent faster (e.g. 2.4 times faster) warming since 1998. This is in comparison to the previous version 3 of the lower tropospheric temperature (TLT) data published in 2009.
Climate skeptics have long claimed that satellite data shows global warming to be less pronounced than observational data collected on the earth’s surface. This new correction to the RSS data substantially undermines that argument. The new data actually shows more warming than has been observed on the surface, though still slightly less than predicted in most climate models.
Both the old record, version 3 in grey, and new record, version 4 in red, are shown in the figure above, along with the difference between the two, in black. The trends since 1998 for both are shown by dashed lines.
Most of the difference between the old and new record occurs after the year 2000. While the old record showed relatively little warming during the oft-debated post-1998 “hiatus” period, the new record shows warming continuing unabated through to present. Similarly, while the old RSS v3 record showed 2016 only barely edging out 1998 as the warmest year in the satellite record, the new v4 record shows 2016 as exceeding 1998 by a large margin.

❤ Irony! Real Scientists use John Christy’s "facts” to prove that Climate Change is REAL.

BTW, John Christy and Roy Spencer are pro-fossil fuel (Exxon), Bible Thumpers and Fox News lovers! And a Koch funded study in 2011 confirmed Global Warming is real.

Republican Climate Deniers

There needs to be a Wall of Shame

Whenever they hold one of their frequent hearings to reject and deny established climate science, congressional Republicans invariably trot out contrarian scientist John Christy, who disputes the accuracy of climate models. In doing so, Christy uses a cherry-picked, error riddled chart, but there’s a nugget of truth in his argument. Although the discrepancy isn’t nearly as large as Christy’s misleading chart suggests, atmospheric temperatures seem not to have warmed quite as fast since the turn of the century as climate model simulations anticipated they would.

Debunked by REAL Scientists

In a new study, a team climate scientists led by Ben Santer sought to answer this question. They effectively disproved Christy’s assertion that the discrepancy was due to models being too sensitive to the increased greenhouse effect. Instead, the main culprit seems to be incorrect inputs used in the climate model simulations.
On the other hand, research has identified a number of real-world cooling influences in the early 21st century that weren’t accurately represented in the climate model simulation scenarios
  • The sun went into an unusually quiet cycle, there was a series of moderate volcanic eruptions
  • The boom in Chinese coal power plants added sunlight-blocking pollution to the atmosphere.
Using statistical tests, Santer’s team showed that those unexpected cooling effects combined with shifts in ocean cycles best explained the model-data discrepancy in atmospheric temperatures over the past 20 years.

Skeptic scientists show climate models are accurate

The answer in this case is that those forcings (solar activity, coal pollution, volcanic eruptions) and ocean cycles acted to temporarily slow the warming of atmospheric temperatures in a way that wasn’t included in the climate model simulation inputs. But that shouldn’t assuage our concerns about climate change – solar activity won’t offset long-term global warming; nor will volcanic eruptions, coal pollution, or ocean cycles. These are all short-term effects that all had a cooling effect over the past 20 years, during which time the planet nevertheless kept on warming due to the overpowering force of human carbon pollution.
The climate models themselves are still quite accurate, and paint a frightening picture of where we’re headed if we follow the status quo scenario of burning lots of fossil fuels. But if we can reduce human carbon pollution, we’ll shift to a scenario with a long-term global warming slowdown.
Christy and Spencer have also been affiliated with various conservative fossil fuel-funded think tanks. And Spencer is on the Board of Advisors of the Cornwall Alliance – a religious group that essentially believes God wouldn’t let damaging climate change happen. Spencer has also made some controversial comments, calling those who disagree with him “global warming Nazis” as well as declaring “I love FoxNews” and saying,

The moral of the story: Acknowledging the problem, accepting the challenge, doing the hard work to achieve a common goal in the future. Because Leaders Lead! If India can do it, sure America can too.

Leaders from around the world put aside their differences to solve Climate Change as a collective “not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”, John F. Kennedy - September 12, 1962

America, Trump is President in job title only. Demand Moral Leadership. Demand a future!

Prime minister, Narendra Modi committed India to achieving 40 percent of its electricity capacity from nonfossil-fuel sources by 2030.
Just a few years ago, the world watched nervously as India went on a building spree of coal-fired power plants, more than doubling its capacity and claiming that more were needed. Coal output, officials said, would almost triple, to 1.5 billion tons, by 2020.
India’s plans were cited by American critics of the Paris climate accord as proof of the futility of advanced nations trying to limit their carbon output. But now, even as President Trump pulls the United States out of the pact, India has undergone an astonishing turnaround, driven in great part by a steep fall in the cost of solar power.
Experts now say that India not only has no need of any new coal-fired plants for at least a decade, given that existing plants are running below 60 percent of capacity, but that after that it could rely on renewable sources for all its additional power needs.
Rather than building coal-fired plants, it is now canceling many in the early planning stages. And last month, the government lowered its annual production target for coal to 600 million tons from 660 million.
The Indian government’s policy research arm, the National Institution for Transforming India, or NITI Aayog, recently released a report in collaboration with the Rocky Mountain Institute in Boulder, Colo., that calculated India could save $60 billion and reduce its projected carbon emissions by 37 percent by 2030 if it adopted widespread use of electric vehicles and more public transportation.
India canceled 13.7 gigawatts of proposed coal-fired power plants last month alone, the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis said. The government has admitted that an additional 8.6 gigawatts of coal-fired generation capacity built at a cost of $9 billion is potentially no longer financially viable because of competition from renewable sources, the institute said.

Florida, you’re on your own. Here’s Why!

Republicans: Why should the Federal government bail you out when hurricanes and flooding are Acts of God. God will “take care of it.”, Rep. Tim Walberg.

Trump: Cuts budgets to Coast Guard, T.S.A. and FEMA to bolster Border Plan and guts NOAA

Democrats: You reap what you sow by electing climate change deniers and denying the role of the Federal government to help ALL Americans.

Republicans only care about Republicans falling in line. Christie’s Post-Hurricane Embrace of Obama Outrages Many in G.O.P.

  • Governor, Rick Scott
  • Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL)
  • Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL-01)
  • Rep. Neal Dunn (R-FL-02)
  • Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL-03)
  • Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL-04)
  • Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-FL-06)
  • Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL-08)
  • Rep. Dennis Ross (R-FL-15)
  • Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL-16)

  • Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL-25)
  • Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL-26)
  • Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL-27)

If Florida is devastated, taxpayers will save hundreds of millions on Trump’s golf trips to Mar-a-Lago.

Floridians, get Florida to join the United States Climate Alliance. Otherwise, it’s time to move!

The State of California has reportedly been wooing EPA talent, standing outside of the EPA and handing out flyers.

Scott Pruitt, why are you so afraid?  #CrimesAgainstHumanity

One additional expense added to the EPA this year is an $800,000, 10-person team for Pruitt’s heightened security detail
Prior administrators have had “door-to-door” security — to and from work, while they were traveling, and for events. The EPA currently doesn’t have the staff to provide that kind of security, so they will have to hire for those positions, E&E News reports.
