Don’t Turn Back Now  ~  Robert Glasper & Ledisi ❤️🎵

I transcribed the lyrics since I couldn’t find them online.  #SoulMusic

How many hills and mountains we had to climb? How many wings have we had to sacrifice just to survive? Slavery to segregation Freedom and the liberation No account of how much we paid And deep within this revolution There lives a Harlem institution Where many dreams were born and legends were made
So don't turn back now We've come too far not to make it Don't turn back now Don't turn back now It might be hard You can take it Don't turn back now
How many wings have we had to overcome And how many lives must we lose until we are one? Until we have won
Music is a revelation Sound of every generation Powerful enough to free us from chains Laughter after everything we've been through There is nothing that we can't do There is nothing to stand in our way
So don't turn back now ...
We can never give up We were born to win We can win when times get rough YES WE CAN
We're the builders of a nation We're the source on inspiration We're not backing down until we have won
So don't turn back now We've come too far not to make it Don't turn back now Don't turn back now It might be hard
But we can never give up You can take it Don't turn back now
Hold each other Hold each other Don’t give up Never give up

Don’t Turn Back Now is an original song written for “The Apollo, an Oscar nominated documentary celebrating Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater — THE “mecca for black musicians and entertainers over its 85-year history“.

The former Fort Worth police officer who fatally shot a woman through her bedroom window this weekend was charged with murder on Monday and booked into jail without the possibility for bond, according to Tarrant County jail records.
Aaron Y. Dean, the officer, had resigned earlier on Monday, hours before the police chief had planned to fire him amid the community’s growing anger and frustration after the death of the woman, Atatiana Jefferson.
The interim Fort Worth police chief, Ed Kraus, had said in an afternoon news conference that the department was conducting a criminal investigation into the officer’s actions. He said he had reached out to the F.B.I. about the possibility of starting a civil rights investigation.
“I get it,” Chief Kraus said of the widespread public outrage that followed the release of body camera video showing that Ms. Jefferson had been given no warning that it was a police officer who had crept into her backyard, shined a light into her bedroom window and shouted, “Put your hands up! Show me your hands!” immediately before firing a single fatal shot.
“Nobody looked at that video and said there was any doubt that this officer acted inappropriately,” the chief said.

There are similarities between the murder cases of officers Aaron Dean and Amber Guyger.

  • Both White police officers from Texas. Guyger is from Dallas,
  • Both victims were Black  #RacialProfiling
  • Both American citizens were murdered in their in own homes without legal cause — no reason whatsoever!
  • Both officers resigned before their trials due to public outrage.
There’s a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality. There’s people being murdered unjustly and not being held accountable. People are being given paid leave for killing people. That’s not right

A report commissioned by the Senate Intelligence Committee obtained by The New York Times on Monday read that a group known as the Internet Research Agency (IRA) sought to exploit racial divides during the 2016 election and make an impact on Facebook and Instagram.
The report stated that at least 30 pages created by the IRA targeting black voters gained 1.2 million followers, The New York Times reported. It also targeted Bernie Sanders supporters and those who were likely to vote for then–Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. “The most prolific IRA efforts on Facebook and Instagram specifically targeted black American communities and appear to have been focused on developing black audiences and recruiting black Americans as assets," the report obtained by the Times stated.
“Facebook’s engagement with partisan firms, its targeting of political opponents, the spread of misinformation and the utilization of Facebook for propaganda promoting disingenuous portrayals of the African-American community is reprehensible,” said Derrick Johnson, NAACP president and CEO, in a statement.

NAACP has returned a monetary donation we recently received from Facebook, and we are calling on supporters to log out of Facebook and Instagram on Tuesday, December 18. We implore you, our partners, friends, and supporters to join us. #LogOutFacebook”, NAACP @NAACP - Dec 17, 2018

The #LogOutFacebook is a protest—a way to signify to Facebook that the data and privacy of its users of color matter more than its corporate interests, and that as the largest social network in the world, it is Facebook’s corporate social responsibility to ensure that people of color are well represented in their workforce and recognize that users of color have a right to be protected propaganda and misinformation,” read the statement from the NAACP.

It’s all about WHITE Supremacy. Patriots Wake Up #RESIST #RacistRepublicans #RacistInChief

“Donald Trump is a racist. This is not a random accusation but an inference drawn from ample evidence. He has demonstrated those traits and behaviors throughout his time in public life.”
This is another example of how nonwhites -- especially African-Americans -- are special  targets of Trump's rage and disrespect. Beyond the petulant scorn designed to titillate his right-wing base, Trump's latest comments offer more evidence of his authoritarian agenda.
Patriotism is compulsory. Freedom of speech is undermined if not wholly overturned -- especially for those who dare to criticize or otherwise oppose Donald Trump, his allies or his public. In a version of "blood and soil" racism, those who protest or otherwise dissent are to be expelled from the country -- especially if they happen not to be white.
The political dividends of these efforts to humiliate and force compliance across the color line are directly related to the profile and visibility of the black and brown body which is made to suffer.

“Black athletes, black soldiers and veterans and yes, even America's first black president, Barack Obama, have been victims of this onslaught of white rage fueled by racial insecurity, existential angst and imagined vulnerability.”

Across the American South and elsewhere black veterans were special targets for lynchings and other types of white mob violence.

Donald Trump and the current Republican Party's threat to American democracy is real and immediate.  Black athletes and other nonwhites are an easy first target. But as with all authoritarians and demagogues the circle of Donald Trump's enemies will keep expanding, ultimately to include those who thought the birthright of their color or their gender or the language they speak would save them. It will not. You have been warned.”

'Sullivan, Missouri for decades had held an open secret: it was a “sundown town

White Supremacy makes America a “shit*ole” country

A white woman lamented that, in this day and age, her black friends still had to think twice about where they could go. “This knocks the breath out of me. Your beautiful family has to consider factors mine doesn’t. WTF, America?”
A third friend, a black playwright named Michelle Johnson, mentioned the Green Book, the historical travel guide for African American motorists that in the old days of Jim Crow had provided an invaluable roadmap. It listed locations where black drivers could fill up their tanks, get a bite to eat or stay the night, all without danger.
“Just saying,” Johnson remarked. “Unfortunately, it needs a comeback.”
The Negro Travelers’ Green Book, to give its full title, has in its original form already made something of a comeback. A Californian publisher has started releasing facsimiles of several of its editions, including the first from 1936 and the last, dated 1964 – the year the Civil Rights Act outlawed Jim Crow discrimination.
The guide was the brainchild of Victor Green, a Harlem postal worker who spotted a market for travel tips directed at the growing car-owning black middle class. He compiled a list of hospitable outlets to be sold through mail order. Tiny and slim, with a green cover in a riff on the writer’s name, the guide punched above its weight. Green defined its purpose demurely, saying it was intended to “make travelling better for the Negro”.

“If your son ever goes on my property I’ll kill him,” the man warned her. “I don’t like niggers on my property.”

Wehmeyer was 13 years old. He didn’t know it then, but Sullivan for decades had held an open secret: it was a “sundown town”. Well into the 1990s, black people unlucky enough to find themselves within its limits after dark could expect a rude awakening.

Black drivers in Missouri were warned last summer to 'exercise extreme caution when travelling throughout the state'

💗  Truth! Wisdom! #StrongWomen #AmericanHistory

Human beings are set apart from the animals. We have a spiritual self, a physical self and a conscience. Therefore, we can make choices and are responsible for the choices we make. We may choose order and peace, or confusion and chaos. If we choose the former, we may cultivate and share our talents with others. If we choose the latter, we will isolate and segregate others. We can also expand our vision to include the universe and the diversity of its people, or we can remain narrow and shallow and isolate those who are unfamiliar.
To this day I believe we are here on earth to live, grow up and do what we can to make this world a better place for all people to enjoy freedom. Differences of race, nationality or religion should not be used to deny any human being citizenship rights or privileges. Life is to be lived to its fullest so that death is just another chapter. Memories of our lives, our works and our deeds will continue in others.

Women making a difference #GetOutTheVote #BlueWave2018 #ElectWomen

On December 14—the day after 63 percent of white women in Alabama voted for pedophilia-accused republican Roy Moore while 98 percent of black women voted for democrat Doug Jones—popular blogger and author Luvvie Ajayi posted a link to her Facebook and Twitter accounts that led to a list containing the names and websites of over 100 black women running for office in the United States in 2018.
“Mainly, we just started doing it so that people could start doing some research and know who was out there,” Braxton tells Broadly. “It’s been good to hear some people say they actually had no idea that they had someone running in their district.”

The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.

Doug Jones Paying Homage to Martin Luther King #MLK

I'm pledging to do that tonight, but I will tell you, tonight is a night for rejoicing because as Dr. King said, as Dr. King liked to quote, "The moral arc of the universe is long but it bends toward justice." Tonight, tonight, ladies and gentlemen, tonight, tonight in this time, in this place, you helped bend that moral arc a little closer to that justice and you did it, not only was it bent more, not only was its aim truer but you sent it right through the heart of the great state of Alabama in doing so.

Senator Doug Jones and Democrats,

African American Voters have given YOU their vote. They’ve entrusted their hopes and dreams in YOU.

Now it’s time for YOU to fulfill YOUR responsibility to SERVE the people of Alabama who have been taken for granted, ignored and oppressed by Republicans and Democrats.
