I mean,, call me biased but I don’t want another httyd series unless it’s about h e r 💫

Since the beginning of Dawn’s development I knew I wanted to give her a mask and get-up similar to Valka’s armor, who’s in a way mirrors the Bewilderbeast. With Dawn being Valka’s apprentice, it only makes sense. I’m still working out the kinks of the design, but I’m very happy with the mask which is more of a combination between a terrible terror and sand wraith. A testament to the frenetically fierce heart underneath the sturdy exterior she posses, and her skill in speed and stealth. She’s a bit on the short end height wise, but man does her sharp edges pack a punch.

‪I gave in and made a Nightlight oc! Her name is Blacktide. She’s a feral goofball who hatched a little too early as a baby and ended up learning how to fly later than usual. She’s much more comfortable maneuvering her way on land or in sea rather than in the air. She may not be the most experienced flyer, but she’s quite agile on foot and great at hunting fish. I’m not sure if nightlights all have retractable teeth, but also for one reason or another only her bottom row of teeth are retractable.

I love the idea/headcanon that Toothless and the LightFury have more babies later on and couldn’t resist making my own. ;u; Blacktide’s got all the grace of her mother in water, and all the dingus aspects of her father on land. 🖤🌊‬

HTTYD OC - Dawn the Dragon Thief 

heyy, it’s ya girl ;) 

Snarky, strong-willed and a force to be reckoned with, Dawn is the youngest of four older brothers. Ambitious and goal-oriented, she’s a quick learner who keeps her emotions guarded as a no-nonsense type of girl despite all the nonsense she enjoys to give her foes. She’s skilled and quick in flight on the back of her Wraith, and a threat in combat when armed with a dagger or two. She also has sectoral heterochromia in both eyes (brown and blue). 

It was about time to update and give her a proper-ish character sheet, especially since the boys got one. Looking back at Dawn’s tag on here, I can see just how much her story has really evolved and taken shape over the past year. Her story certainly isn’t the same as it was in her very first design post.

So, to give a more up to date pitch of her story (without spoilers): 

HTTYD OC - Randulfr the Rebellious.

Finally made a lil character sheet for this Viking dude that Dawn teams up with later in her story.

Headstrong, brave, and persistent, Randulfr is the honey-eyed heir to his father’s throne as Chief of his respected tribe. There’s an air of confidence about him, he can seem borderline arrogant but he’s good-natured at heart. He’s very sociable and lives for the now. He doesn’t take well to his father’s orders/wishes- nor any authority for that matter. Hence where his Rebellious surname came from. A wild child in his youth, Randulfr first crossed paths with Dawn as kids. On a few occasions his tribe would travel to meet hers for important talks of treaties, trades, and such ally chieftain matters. As a boy he tagged along with his father on such trips. During their stay, he’d play with the other kids his age which is where he met Dawn. And.. well... they didn’t get along all that well back then. Up to this point, duty to his tribe pretty much came second only to his true fleeting ambitions. Randulfr’s future has been planned out for him for as long as he could remember. Set in stone. Stuck in an arranged marriage for the sake of politics with the heavy mantle of Chiefdom looming over head, it really is no wonder the young heir is willing to do whatever he can to cherish the little freedom he has left before it’s gone. Which is why when a familiar face is up against a force that may require a little more than one human and two flying reptiles, he nearly jumps at the chance to get away and he won’t take no for an answer.

Now I’ve posted some more updates of Dawn on my instagram that I seem to be forgetting to post here (stuff like her brothers’ designs and a lil face-paint modification). I’ll try and do better! >o<

Now this guy is someone I drew with Dawn awhile back amidst the beginning of my countdown. His name is Radulfr. 

For a bit of context: Randulfr and Dawn meet again. They have got a little bit of a history. They used to know each other for a brief time as kids.. kids that really didn’t get along well... at all (they hated each other’s guts lol). Randulfr is the son of the Chief in his Clan which were allies to Dawn’s home tribe. Dawn doesn’t recognize him at first and probably wouldn’t have if she wasn’t stopped in her tracks when he called her out by name.

I’ll draw a character sheet for him too eventually, talking more about who he is and his personality, but I had this first “re-”introduction in my head that I had to get out- even if it means jumping forward in her story a bit. He’s got his own problems he’s trying to.. get away from, while Dawn reluctantly decides a semi-desperate human ally couldn’t hurt in trying to take down the pesky Gareth.

HTTYD OC - Gareth the Dragon Trapper.

It’s about time I actually posted this guy. :] This is Gareth. My tall, relatively young, main antagonist that Dawn runs into in her story. Gareth the Ghastly? Gareth Gallowswill? Still workin on his full title, but he is a dragon trapper/handler.

Gareth is driven, skilled, and smart. As well as a bit arrogant and headstrong. He has his own way of dealing with dragons to sell to Drago and the whole dragon trade. He traps and breaks dragons, kinda like how one would break a wild stallion (minus the tenderness and patience), to make the testiest dragons manageable enough to trade. He is actually very well liked and praised by his home village. People find him charming (which he is), and he admires tales of the notorious Grimmel the Grizzly (he comes from the same area as Grimmel). 

He’s seen the destruction of dragons which is why he believes a sustainable life alongside them is just preposterous. He wants to make a name for himself as a trapper beyond his village. When he’s finally put in charge of a small trappers fleet to do so, he soon discovers that a particular dragon rider is not going to make it very easy for him... but then again, he won’t make it all that easy for her now will he?

‪Dawn reuniting with an old childhood friend, Randulfr the Rebellious.

‬This happens at an earlier arc in her story, pre HTTYD2 after she left The Home of the Bewilderbeast to explore and stop Drago’s trappers elsewhere and wayy before she meets the gang. Again, Dawn isn’t ‘feral’ like Valka is- she’s sociable when needed to be. And more than naught if the situation calls for it she’ll blend among fellow villagers to dig for info or stock up on supplies. On one of these said endeavors she visits a village that looks friendly enough (dragons landing on its outskirts and remaining out of sight- doing their own thing as she heads to where the people are). She doesn’t recognize the village at first but soon enough Randolf spots her and it really take her back. She ends up staying a bit actually, I’ve got a whole lil arc planned here but I won’t say nothin for now..

The new HTTYD Dragonvine comic finally comes out next week, so I wanted to try something a little different style-wise. I’ve said it many times but I’d love to make a HTTYD fan comic of these guys, and hopefully will be able to give it a go after I finish the D3 countdown.

You also may be glad to hear that YES, I’ve finally settled on a dragon to give Dawn for her story! A female Sand Wraith by the name of Dusk. Dusk’s extreme agility and smarts coincide perfect with Dawn’s personality and skills. Sand Wraith’s are known for their expertise in camouflaging under the sand, but are also very fast and maneuverable. Which works perfect with the Dawn’s style of flight. Together they make a pretty great team.. (And don’t worry, Allister the terrible terror is still in the picture.)
