Just had the cutest interaction while training Forte.

We were working on alternating between casual heeling/llw and fmp with him in harness around the block. We'd come full circle back to the driveway when I spotted a young kid on a bike coming up the road.

I put Forte in a down and planned to reward him as kid and dad passed by. But the kid saw Forte and stopped in front of us while repeatedly pointing out the doggy. (Kid was young, training wheels and dad's hand on the back of his seat.)

I could tell dad was getting uncomfortable because kid would not move on and was very fixated on Forte. So I looked at dad and explained that this dog is learning to be a service dog, which is a special dog who helps people. That this dog loves people but needs to be able to ignore them when he's working so he can focus on the handler. And if they had a few minutes, would they want to help me train him.

Dad relaxed and said yes. So I asked the kid if he could ride around real fast and call to the doggy. If the doggy stayed in his down I'd reward him with a tasty treat. Kid was pumped to do so. After a few minutes I thanked them both for helping me train my dog.

As the kid rode off I could hear him excitedly telling his dad "I helped train a service dog. They're really special dogs ". And dad agreed that he did and that he'd done a good job. Kid proceeded to say "I'm going to tell mom I helped train a service dog. Does she know they're special dogs?" To which dad said mom's going to be impressed because she knows those are special helper dogs and their training is really important.

It was such a wholesome interaction.

Sir Galahad the Cute

Adopted in 2000 from a cocker rescue, Galahad was our first cocker and my first experience with pleasant dogs less than ~60 lb (27kg). Galahad was quite sure that he was bigger than my 65lb dogs, in fact. Sir Galahad the Cute was joyful, he was confident, he was bouncy, he was clever. He solved problems we didn't know were problems but boy were they problems after he solved them.

The Little Man was stunningly beautiful, to the point that people actively attempted to get their faces torn off because that gorgeous little dog couldn't *possibly* be serious about that (adorable) snarl of a siren song. He didn't care for strangers, but would tolerate them after a formal introduction--you just had to pause for the introduction first! Somehow experienced dog owners and even veterinarians would forget everything they knew about approaching an unfamiliar dog when they first saw his golden aura.

He went deaf at about 12. Until then he would wake up and follow us around throughout the day, but once he was fully deaf, he started sleeping through interruptions. Yvaine originally joined our household (2011) to wake Galahad up periodically by bouncing the furniture, and so he could follow her to where the activity was, so he could stay active and fit. And mostly fit and active and happy he stayed, until he left us on July 28, 2015.

My photography skills aren't any better than they used to be, but cameras have improved a lot. So almost all of my photos of Galahad are terrible. Fortunately a friend with camera skillz got some photos of the Rubber Puppy in, oh, probably late middle age. Thanks to Solomon Peachy for permission to use his photos.

I heard Sad Tristan Noises and went to see. He had discovered an exciting stash of candy in a boot above his crate (we keep our shoes there so he won't carry them around and get them dog-saliva-soggy). It seems he was exploring. As I watched, he stuck his nose in the boot, then sat and made more Sad Tristan Noises, several times running.

I think he wanted to play "swap me," only he was afraid of picking up the bag of candy because it was too tempting. Tristan is getting good at turning his back or leaving the room when he is too tempted by stuff he's not supposed to steal; I think the attempt at impulse control combined with the possibility of a treat for "swapping" a found item was creating too much of an internal conflict for such a good Tristan puppy to handle.

(The candy was removed to somewhere safer, and Tristan got praise and carrots.)

Yesterday was exciting.

The grey Big Doggy, the one in recent photos with Tristan, had a mild limp. It's not severe, it will probably be gone in about a week, but after feeding the Big Doggies I went to check her usual hangouts, to see if there was a new sinkhole or other hazard that might have hurt her.

And I accidentally led the Spaniels through a stickerplant patch. These are like sharp, barbed, three-dimensional asterisks; they're vicious.

I carried Tristan back inside (Yv dropped most of the stickers right away, and just needed her ears combed). I started trying to comb the stickers out, but he had them in all four feet and it was just taking too long. So I grabbed the clippers and just cut off his coat everywhere there were stickers.

Tris was so, so good. He sat and waited, even though the stickers hurt and I was rushing. He gave me each leg and let me zoom right over the foot, he turned when I repositioned him, he even rolled over while I got his belly.

So once I was done getting the burrs out, I just stopped.

Photos can't do this justice. He looks like he was attacked by a rabid weedwhacker.

I'll fix it later.
