for fun:

why did you choose the breed/mix of the dog(s) you have?

(or why did you choose your future breed, that works too!)

Okay, 1) I physically can work with them, I can lift them if I have to, I don't need to maintain them daily, I can do all their grooming if I need to.

2) They're fun-smart. Constantly looking for entertainment, and keeping them occupied is highly enjoyable.

3) They'll tell me off if they think I am not offering enough motivation for something. It's really important to me that pets have a sense of self-worth & self-confidence that lets them determine a fair price for their attention & biddability.

4) They don't pester the horses. They don't want to herd them, they don't want to chase or bite them. They're cool with being buddies but if the horses are running, they get out of the way and stay still.

Oh yes, 5) they want interaction, lots of it. They'll be patient through a bad few days but eventually they're going to start insisting that I play again.

Look at the boy go! In short grass or tall grass, Tristan maintains the same ground-covering bouncy cocker trot. It's easy to see how cockers were bred to hunt in underbrush, because Tristan just moves on through it like it's nothing.

Sometimes I see him, sometimes I don't, and I can't even follow him by watching the grass move. He doesn't really disturb it or make noise.

I got halfway decent Bad Photography because he was lifting his head to follow a scent in the air; usually his head is down, making him that much harder to see.

Ah, you know I think spaniels are the perfect dog 🤣 and I love when other people get to see why!

Sniffing is what spaniels do best! Their chief strength is sniffing. Sniffing, and cuddling. Their two, two main strengths are sniffing, and cuddling. And wriggling. Their three main strengths are sniffing, cuddling, and wriggling, and also problem-solving. Their four main strengths... among their main strengths... I'll come in again.

Such fluffy ears! They're so handler-focused, very eager to please, love to learn & practice tricks. Very strong instinctive fetch; it doesn't take much to encourage all kinds of games. They want to be around you, if you do a lot of walking or running they want to be right there and quickly build speed and stamina to accompany you. But as long as they get their playtime, they're entirely content to hang out quietly with you indoors. Possibly on you.

And they're just so SILLY and HAPPY all the time.

Our cockers have this unbelievably adorable trot when they're following a scent trail. You can spot them at a distance by the busy bouncy motion and the constant tail wag. It doesn't seem like it can be an efficient motion, but they can go like that for an hour and more without a break. Watching them follow scent trails is a delight; they're having so much fun.

Keep-Away

All our cockers have played a game we call keep-away. None of the other dogs have, except they occasionally participated when the cockers started it.

It goes like this:

1) Ostentatiously play with toy. Chew it, toss it in the air, drop it on paws and pick it back up, even tilt head back to chew it reeeeeeally obviously.

2) Dare playmate to take it. Look mischievously at them while holding it close.

3) Snatch it back.

4) Push it away. Really dare playmate to take it.

5) Playmate grabs toy.

6) Sit and watch carefully while playmate repeats steps 1-4, then leap forward and snatch it back when they push it away in step 4.

Repeat until delightedly exhausted.

Rerun because I adore @malinwoman 's rules for "Don't Touch My Ballie."

More of Tristan's Rocks

That day, Tristan brought this piece of flint inside, and wanted to play. So we played gently (and I took pictures) until his Short Attention Spaniel ran out, then I put it with the Farm Rocks.

(originally posted Nov 2018)

These are a few of the rocks I'm pretty sure Tristan added to the Farm Rocks. The flint "keep-away" rock is on the far left. The second from the right is an oyster shell. The limerock on the right is the one he carried in so proudly yesterday.

Cocker spaniels climb. They like to perch. They like to explore heights. Cockers like to stand on the back of a couch... or on a kitchen counter... and survey their kingdom.

We have tall daybeds, not couches, but Tristan appears to find this acceptable.

[Image Description: Tristan, a black and white cocker spaniel, lays in a room corner, perched on top of a pile of burgundy and navy pillows used as the back of a daybed "couch." Next to him is a window, showing that the burgundy quilted surface of the daybed is raised well above the floor.]

Rerun, because Tristan loves his keep-away.
