These two get me out of bed and outside. Even when the air hurts my face.

The thing about dogs is that they come preprogrammed to love you. Puppies want to sleep in the bed so much that throughout history you'll hear of "just one night" turning into an adult dog in its master's bed. And that's pretty beautiful.

The thing about ferrets us that they do not come preprogrammed to love you. To cooperate and hunt together, yes. Yet for the thousands of years they've been domesticated, nip training and trust building have been the focus of their handlers who don't want to wear gloves. "Ferret legging" is a sport. And yet if you treat them well, they will climb into bed with you and cuddle with you as though you were just a Big Ferret. And that's pretty beautiful.

Happy sixth birthday to this loyal, empathetic, humbling boy. He's teaching me to speak better Human while I teach him to speak better Dog. Here's to at least six more years of TenSoon.

First real group hike for these three. It was admittedly easier to handle three than it was to handle two at first. Either I'm better at this or they are.
