okay so ive been thinking about the scylla 'death cap' mushroom/mycelium seed and i just remembered that ive never shared my thoughts, and that yuo were pretty bothered by how the show never was established how scylla knew it. so heres my thoughts:
most important: i dont think its a hyper-specific Mycelium Seed.
if you watch the Jungle episode of the Our Planet doco series, you'll actually see this fungus in action (the segment lasts maybe 5 mintues, starting at 37:17 seconds on the youtube upload, i imagine its the same on actual netflix) you get to watch the fungus compel and kill some insects; its a tad graphic, but very facinating!
and i recommend watching it, because when i did, however long ago that was, it occured to me that maybe the mycelium wanted it because
- it mattered to raelle. the mycelium sensed that the seed had emotional value to her, and thus used it to connect with her
or
2. its about possesion. the fungus (and thus maybe the seed?? when used offensively instead of a show off to hot girl way?) infects and kills things from the inside, sort of making them... explode in a way. (raelles powers in general make so much more sense after watching this segment of the Our Planet episode, its kinda wild to think about actually)
so yeah. i think scylla just came into an uncommon necro seed from some defector in a dodger community, or extra reading from izadora or something, and used it to impress raelle. the mycelium sensed this in some all consuming We Are All Dead Witches And Know Everything That Happens On This Base or whatever it was that they had going on, and used it to connect with raelle for whatever reason.
so those are my thoughts. im not sure if this is still on your mind at all, but i hope this was a fun theory for you either way
It's always on my mind lol Those are interesting theories.
With the first one, while I could accept that mother mushroom knew the seed was something special to Raelle... I think if that was the case, it would've chosen a seed that Raelle's mother taught her since that would have a much deeper emotional value than the death cap seed she heard once from her new girlfriend. Mother mushroom could've connected with any witch just by sharing a seed that they were emotionally attached to.
With the second one, thank you for sending me down the fungus infected rabbit hole because once I saw that segment of the episode, I had to look deeper into this. That's definitely fascinating and actually makes me even more upset that they completely abandoned so much of Scylla's story because this would've fit perfectly into her background not only as a Necro, but also as a member of the Spree. Mother Mushroom knowing the death cap seed makes sense, but a random dodger knowing this seed that even Alder had never heard... I can't accept that Scylla's role in everything wasn't much larger than what they actually showed.
I understand the show got cancelled sooner than they planned and I may be a little bias because my lil necro spree dodger fugitive holds a special place in my heart, but they could've given some sort of explanation. I appreciate you sharing your theories 😄
