As requested by the-half-blood-hallowed-tardis, I wrote about Maria Callas on my blog TalesofTessitura

The great 19th century Assoluta Maria Malibran.
Malibran was the operatic ancestor of the greatest recorded singer of the art form, Maria Callas. Like Callas, Malibran vocally embodied the fach of the ‘soprano sfogato’ or ‘assoluta’ voice, an incredibly rare instrument that could span the entire female range (Malibran’s range extended from a low D3 to a high F6) and could sing both dramatic coloratura contralto roles as well as high dramatic soprano and coloratura repertoire.
An extremely beautiful woman, her career was tragically curtailed at the age of 28 having died following a riding accident, but her prodigious talent and legendary musicianship makes her one of opera’s most enduring icons.

“Her instinct, her mastery over the machine, was pure witchcraft. I cannot analyze this woman’s acting. I only know that no one else so effectively worked in front of a camera.”–Bette Davis.
The celebrated dramatic soprano Rosa Ponselle singing ‘Morgen’ from Strauss’s Four Last Songs lieder.
Ponselle was 57 years old when this was recorded. Retired from the stage and public singing, but still with a gorgeously rich middle voice intact and very subtle and moving musicality.
