Dolls Ahoy!

@dollsahoy / dollsahoy.tumblr.com

My life with dolls and other things. Thanks to everyone who likes my sewing! She/her, but there're no problems with they/them, either.  Your gender is up to you.  Black Lives Matter. Stop Asian Hate.

I don't want to be a popular blog, so if you're here because you clicked on something that I deleted or turned off reblogs, know that I did it for the sake of my notifications

And, if I haven't deleted it or disabled reblogs, please remember that it's not worth your time to argue with strangers on the internet. Blocking me will make us all feel better.

And! If you're new to Tumblr, please do something with your blog as soon as possible to show that you're a real person. Even if you never intend to do anything but look at what other people have posted, you should know that Tumblr has a big problem with bots using blank blogs to boost their SEO by following a lot of people, so a lot of people on Tumblr will automatically block blank blogs.

Blocking is a big part of Tumblr culture, for a lot of reasons.

as I look at the thumbnails of so many of the videos YT recommends to me, I keep thinking:

is it enough to be anti fast-fashion?

is the massive thrift haul really necessary?

does it matter if you get so many pieces of decent quality clothes for so little money if you still only wear them one or two times?

(am I speaking from experience here...?)

Extremely detailed, and nearly an hour and a half long, video about what Honey/PayPal did, and how Gamers Nexus is able to bring a lawsuit against them thanks to a North Carolina law

Here's the whole group:

DeeDee is a repainted 1980s "Hispanic sculpt" Barbie head, rerooted with unraveled rib knit fabric yarns, on a Project MC2 body

Shep is a Barbie Extra pet head adapted to go onto a My Scene guy body, spray painted white

Francie is a rerooted Smashin' Satin reproduction Francie head on a modern articulated Kurhn body

Enrique is a Curvy Karl/Daisy head, with sculpted hair and new paint, on a Creatable World body

Here's Enrique!

Enrique is a Curvy Carl/Daisy Barbie head on a Creatable World body. I removed all of the original hair and paint, sculpted new hair from epoxy putty, and attempted to paint the face in vintage style

again, I acknowledge that he's not perfect, but I'm still very happy with how he turned out

As you can see, he's very much inspired by Ricky and not at all a copy, as much because of the sculpt differences as because of my mid tier painting skills

If I were doing this project over again, I would acetone shrink the head before sculpting the new hair, and I might make the eyes smaller. I'm not upset with what I have done, though

(I also want to acknowledge that I understand that the name Enrique is part of the whole Heinrich/Henry name lineage, and Ricardo would have been closer to the origins of Ricky. I like the name Enrique more.)

it's a video full of historical revisionism and blasphemy and IP rights violations (lighthearted)

Haunted is one of my favourite stretches of new characters in G1 so I feel incredibly happy that Vandala has gotten a new head that doesn't have bald spots and nicer eyes than my first one.I gewt really happy seeing my New Scaremester Haunted High dolls and I do hope one day we'll see them again.

Still in absolute awe how good of a pick this head is for this project, it was a hella good vision and the faceup pulled it all together

Obviously it was real cathartic for my overthinking ass to watch you pop right on through a faceup just declaring that going back and forth over a line (blackwhiteblackwhite) is how you do it

I was listening with volume up for once (this was a real relaxing audio) so I actually heard the theme song which took me out at the knees hahaha absolutely loved it laid over the final shots and those outfits!!!

Thank you!

I was worried the head sculpt would be too modern, but I feel like there's something about the process of changing its use from "grown woman" to "tween boy" that sort of...redefined it? Like...I don't know if it would work to paint this same sculpt in Mod Barbie style and put it on a TNT body, or if that would seem anachronistic or incongruous? Or if it really is all in the paint, and that would work just fine (if anyone wants to try that, feel free, or point me to it if it has been done already--I know there are people who like to repaint modern sculpts with vintage style)

If I were to do the project again, though, I would shrink the head first, because it is absolutely enormous compared to vintage dolls. Still: proof of concept!

if you think about it, every time we tranquilize animals to transport them safely to another place, we are the sleep paralysis demon

You know, I love this comic dearly, but ever since I’ve put it out into the world, I realized that

I made a grave error in my script.

A lot of people in the comments have, understandably, tried to correct me on my choice of words, most specifically on this panel:

IMAGE: An illustration of a little girl sitting with a book in her lap. The words read "And yet a chimp can not learn language the way a human can".
ALT

“And yet a chimp can not learn language the way a human can.”

And I’m here to admit my mistake………….

I forgot to put a disclaimer reminding people that I do, in fact, know what the fuck I’m talking about.

Alright, I know that there’s a fun little factoid that gets passed around a lot - that gorillas/apes/chimps can learn sign language, and therefore CAN do language as well!

And the thing is - no, that’s not actually true. Not in the way you may have come to believe it.

If you want the TL;DR of it:

  • most, if not all, projects involving great apes and sign language were started and largely led by people with no actual native OR near-native understanding of sign language. Even if the apes DID learn signs, they did not learn ASL in any meaningful way.
  • the tapes used to prove that the apes were effectively communicating in ‘sign’ were heavily doctored and cut in order to make them seem more cohesive and convincing than they actually were
  • through a thorough review of the tapes, the apes (gorillas, chimps) involved were found to be effectively signing random things until the handler saw one that they thought was ‘correct’
  • the handlers were often incredibly close to the apes and were often giving their charge signals - sometimes signing things for them to repeat, and the apes were often determined to be only copying signs their handler threw up, which was counted as ‘correctly answering’
  • many, many apes often signed in an extremely limited manner - although they had the ability to sign many words, they rarely, if ever, asked questions - one of the main hallmarks of ‘true’ language use
  • human language is thoroughly agreed upon by linguists to be a specific ability, and it has been determined that current apes do not have anything similar, though - importantly!! - they are still able to communicate in a multitude of incredibly complex and effective ways!

For further reading, I would suggest the following:

And HERE is a very succinct podcast episode that neatly summarizes the entire issue within an hour and twenty minutes:

I highly reccomend this Soup Emporium video on the subject, it covers most of the same stuff the You’re Wrong About podcast ep does but he also talks about those dogs and cats that press buttons to “talk” and specifically focuses on how this whole thing has a lot of fucked up ableist implications that should be acknowledged. Just be warned for mentions of animal cruelty, sexual harassment, and ableism. (I also reccomend his video about Helen Keller which expands on a lot of the ideas about ableism and language he brought up in the Koko one.)

Also stellar comic OP I love it!
