Finished the other yellow sock :3

I basically did them just to coordinate with a jacket I haven't even made yet 😅 I thrifted this piece of quilted bunny themed material recently and immediately wanted to make a quilt jacket.

Thought this would be such an easy project 'cause I'd just use my bomber jacket pattern. But pulled it out tonight and found it's absolutely huge on the Unoss torso, and also extra wide around the bottom to be gathered into a ribbed knit band which I can't do with this thick quilty bit.

Am v frustrated that I can't ever seem to just whip out a quick sewing job, it's always gotta be this whole ordeal.

And I'm so mad that apparently the Besties Ken was on Amaz*n for all of two seconds and sold out and I missed it???

Ohhh ok that just made me realize I'm "just" pms'ing. Ah ha. Yeah I'm aggravated at so much stuff rn 😅

Well, Unoss looks adorable. And I do have two whole socks on her. And this fabric was $2. So.

I got one of the water squirter Popple toys off eBay!!

They say Arco on the back, so from the same company that made the remote controlled Popples, my very favorite merch of all time.

I never thought I'd get my hands on one of these, I've never even seen them come up for sale.

I had no idea he'd be so big! I love it! Perfect!

Arms, legs, and head move. The squirter in this one still works even!

I know because. He smells SO BAD. That I gave in and dunked him under soapy water. To no avail I might add ☹️ Cigarette smoke and something else ... like garbage funk. Plus old and musty.

So I'm so happy to have him, and so unhappy with the smell that I don't want to put him in my display and stink it all up in there.

The extremities are vinyl-y and the body is hard plastic. I hate most methods of de-stinking because it takes so long and I hate waiting 🙂‍↕️ But there's no way around this one.

What's in the Box?

PONY PONIES IN THE BOX

If you've been following along you may have seen that @queenofsquids printed the Takara-inspired BJD last week, both in a "mini" test form and a full-sized one. The full-sized one was supposed to be in yellow, but the pure yellow resin turned out to be a more orangey tone. She incredibly generously offered to send me the orange pony BJD

And then

She incredibly incredibly again generously sent not only the little test takara-bjd in grey BUT ALSO printed my original takara 3D model and sent that?! This is so unbelievably kind and generous. I was so surprised when I opened them all!

I'm not sure if you were all aware but I actually dont have a print of the original "Takara duplicate" doll. I did get the seapony PLA printed at the library (and it was my first ever 3D print!).

For my second print, I got the Dollightful bunny doll printed because I wanted to have experience with jointed dolls made by other people before I put more complex models out. So I figured it would be a while before I got the chance to see my newer models printed.

So like its actually so kind of @queenofsquids to send these but also it's really meaningful to me because I started the takara project where I became obsessed with them over a year ago. It's so amazing to see this thing that frankly I spent so much time fiddling with (even if there are some imperfections; more about that later) and hold it in my hands 🥹 I just keep looking at them and smiling

Also I immediately stole the clothes off my NaNaNa dolls and put them on mini-takara-bjd. They're a little short but fit pretty well!

Some design notes/planned adjustments under cut

I am so impressed that you MADE THIS. And the entire model printed with no problems and fit together and WORKS first try. I'm so happy you did this! And shared it!

That was what, twenty parts???? Incredible.

I'm so happy 🥹

All the pictures of the little pony dressed up are killing me! I didn't try anything on her yet and I cannot believe how cute. The added levels of cute 😭

I have a phobia of resin dust so I avoid sanding more than I should 😅 But agree the smallest bit esp on the peanuts should make that fit, and I will give that a try on the next print (if I can get that yellow mixed ...)

Really looking forward to what else you get up to!

@otterloreart The tiny test print firmed up in ambient light enough to string her -- I'm not sure a mini-print will be much good as feedback but here she is for fun! She's adorable 😭

successfully printed both batches of parts in the mango resin :3

I was so scared those thicker supports had melded together into a solid problem, but it turned out to just be the viscous resin stretching between the upright bars and it all cleared out after drip and wash. the thicker supports were definitely harder to snap off and my left hand in particular resented the work, I guess the rain that rolled in wasn't helping my joints there.

also 3 different spots were ... gooey. I'm not sure what happened -- definitely squishy areas like an old tootsie roll pop and not the shiny-sticky from not getting washed enough. think I need to set these parts in some good sunlight for a while but again, the untimely rain.

pls don't judge my supports too harshly, I am new 🫣

once the second batch is out of the curing station I am gonna post a parts layout photo, but probably won't try stringing until I can set her in the sun.

Here's Otterloreart's Takara Pony BJD printed full size, with a Barbie Dream Besties for scale :)

I need to cure the parts a little further before stringing.

In the last photo you can see the areas that were a bit gooey out of the vat. They hardened up in the uv curing station, but I would like to set them in direct sunlight for a while.

This size is adorable and the doll is so sweet.

I'm really grateful for my boyfriend. He is so supportive, caring and truly makes me feel loved.

...and then he takes the whole block of cheese to work to make a sandwich.

Tbh that Jinafire g3 design would have been great if they didnt try doing that gold hands and lower legs without gradients cuz it looks super bad to me. Plus the lack of a full body scale detailing makes me disappointed the base doll is so disjointed.

I agree. But she'll be an easy pass for me now.

I took some time today to finally work on the flocked hair 1961 Ken that @queenofsquids sent a while ago (thanks again!)

He had one arm that didn't want to stay in the shoulder. I put the top of the arm in "boiling hot but no longer boiling" water, to try to get it to reset to its original shape, then put it in the shoulder opening and pulled down while rotating it, which seems to have gotten the flange back into the shape it needs to be. And now that arm's movement is much more solid than the other arm.

There was one big rub on an eyebrow, and I found some paint in Husband's miniature paint supply that was an OK match--I ended up painting over all of both of the brows, instead of worrying about getting a perfect color match. I also added some paint to the bottom of one eye, to make it a little closer match to the paint in the other eye. I did not do anything about the paint outside the eye area. These vintage dolls aren't perfect.

And, as is common with these dolls, the hair flocking was very damaged. I removed...eh...most of what was left of the original flocking and hair paint, then dug out the "goldenrod" flocking and glue kit I got in oh about 2002 and applied that. I'll let it dry overnight before tapping off the excess fibers. He looks resigned to the wait.

I did a quick dive back into the thrift store just in case any of Miss Suzette's wardrobe or accessories happened to make it out onto the floor (I saw carts full of toys waiting when I left yesterday). Zero other stuff of that era except poor red stained Ken for $4.99.

A little high for me because I hate waiting and red stains take forever. 😩 But I took pity on the poor guy this time... we'll see if I can ever get the stain out tho

It's obvious someone's old stash of dolls got donated, and I can't decide if it's also obvious that the employees there can't tell the difference between vintage dolls and modern dolls, or if they can and are packaging them like this to force collectors to buy up the unwanted modern dolls too 😆

The flocked hair Ken sculpt is so much better than the sculpted hair version--thank you again for sending one to me, I will work on him someday.

And now I'm wondering how he'd look green.

The spring in her neck allows for really good head tilt, which as @dolljunk pointed out with the Licca repro, makes a difference in photos

certainly adds charm, when the rest of the body has limited emotes *stiff arms a phone*

Thanks to Aubrey_Silver and toomanypictures1 on Flickr for the thread about head removal in the Suzette group!

So I heated the head then pushed down on the spring/neck disk from above with a pencil while I pulled the head up and off. I wanted to apply pressure to the spring so I didn't sproing it out pulling on it. This way it didn't stretch out at all. Head came right off, it's not super tight (and it's thinnish vinyl).

So I took all the disintegrating hairs out and put her in a wig for now while I think about rerooting. This wig is a Monique Penny in size 4. I had a whole row of wigs to try on but I just got carried away photographing this one cause it fits so well. Size 4-5 wigs are a bit too big imo, and it was damned hard to find one this small.

I would really like to see her in red hair. I swear I had a red Monique wig this size fifteen years ago, I've no idea where it could have gotten to 🫣

Shoes are hard as well; her feet are too big for vintage Barbie.

But this outfit is from a porcelain Bab (I think) and it goes on pretty well. Miss Suzette has like negative thigh gap though so things get weird up there.

Yeah I think I will reroot her someday. I would really like red hair with poodle bangs. Her rooting holes mostly shrank well with heat except the second row in front where her bangs were. That is torn a bit and thin. Not ideal for my ham fisted self to do my third ever reroot on maybe. But I can probably accomplish it. Possibly.

I wiped her down gently with a sponge and just a tiny bit of water. Unfortunately some of her makeup still came off even with that. I blamed myself harshly.

Then I decided to give her hair a try before dismissing it as a loss, and just softly combing out the end of one mat caused all the broken bits and shedding in the picture.

So I've kinda thrown my hands up and hit pause. I need to see if anyone's made a guide for these beyond my standard knowledge.

I am so glad I thought I could hear a metal spring inside her head right away so I didn't submerge or wash her in the sink. After working her matted hair apart I found there's a hole in her scalp and you can clearly see down in there and yep, metal.

Sooooo hmm. First to decide if I even want to try restoration/customization. And then research how if yes. Because I don't think I can take off her head? I don't want to break anything. I would hate to do a tension reroot on her though; for a doll like this I'd want thread anchoring. And definitely no glue in the head.

At least a magic sponge made the body a lot cleaner. 😔
