Denim Jacket
c.1850
United States
This jacket would have been worn over a woman’s work dress or blouse, most likely while she labored outdoors. Its construction mimics the fashionable hourglass silhouette of the period, with tucks that cinch at the wrists and natural waistline. Denim is typically thought of as a menswear textile, but it was also common in women’s workwear during the 19th century.

It’s hard to use the word “accurate” sometimes with Rothko particularly with his dark paintings. In this case, compared to the other scan and f I’ve seen it’s quite light and peachy looking, comparatively, which sometimes means it was taken in a brighter light for photography. But I’ve seen it go both ways, and so I will keep this one for now until I can get a better assessment of the truth.
I’ve had this one a long time, and even though it could well be more gray than this it’s interesting to see this more pale version for the differences that it does reveal because it’s not photo shopped, I don’t believe, just another example of the odd difficulties taking pictures of these paintings.
I will try to get the word on this, but I see nothing wrong with enjoying it as it is
