just saw a fanfic on ao3 have a dedication for chatgpt... that section is meant for your horny perverted mutual who proofread your work, you violated sacred law and you will be torn apart and laid bare btw

anyways, if you feel the need to use ai to do your work for you, consider this: get a new hobby because this one isn't for you

Consider this. Not everyone has that time, or energy. Again, I just don’t understand this whole thing of “effort is important”

if it were, capitalism wouldn’t work.

I feel like you're on the wrong site to argue about why effort is important. We're here to build community and enjoy the work it takes to create something for said community. The whole point is engaging with each other, but if all you do is give me AI-slop, why should I engage with your work that you didn't even bother to write yourself?

I would rather see a short post about a headcanon or fic idea than have a "fic" that has been generated by the plagiarism machine with that prompt.

If all you want from fandom is engagement with zero effort, go find a different hobby.

fundamentally, that is the most utterly gatekeeping thing I have ever seen. Again. EFFORT IS NOT IMPORTANT. Do you think cardboard box gundam guy put effort into that? Not everything is about effort. I am so tired of this effort-based attitude towards everything.

I put effort into engaging with people, but I have one friend! I put effort into my ideas, and find out someone already did that!

EFFORT ISN’T IMPORTANT!

and I realize, yes, this is very trauma based as a viewpoint, but it’s that same attitude that completely crippled my ability to function as a person. The idea that no matter what, if I put more in, I can get better results. Tl;CR Not everyone can slave over fandom, and I honestly think that being able to is a luxury. Just because you don’t have that privilege doesn’t mean you shouldn’t participate. It’s like saying that anyone who has less than 4 friends shouldn’t have friends at all.

what the fresh hell are you talking about? you dont have to "slave" over fandom to participate. reading is participating, reblogging is participating, discussion is participating. writing takes effort and you only do it when you actively choose to. and if you want to write low effort fic you can do that too. but making a computer that is frying our fucking planet write fic for you is not the move. the lovely thing about fandom is that you can talk to fic writers about headcanons and maybe they'll write the fic for you, or maybe someone will recommend a fic similar to what you were thinking and didn't want to put the effort into writing. that's still participating but ai is not. get it together

When I was little I had an irrational fear of when you tried to turn off your Windows XP and the screen would gradually turn Grey as you choose which power option to enter

That shit was SCARY!!!

Me: ok, sleep time!

I would argue the Windows 95 one is scarier, because it's basically the same thing, right? it just dims the whole screen?

BUT NO! Windows 95 doesn't know that it's running at high enough color depth to even DO that, and calculating that would be slow anyway, this is an OS that can run on a 25mhz 486. So it cheats.

It's "screendoor transparency". It's a checkerboard of black squares. It's relying on the human eye to see that as dimming and not a grid. And it works! mostly. Especially on a relatively blurry CRT, since you wouldn't really have an LCD in 1995.

But it really messes up with text. Thin pixel fonts were all the rage on windows 95, which had a default resolution of 640x480. And a pixel font + a checkerboard grid?

The text bleeds. It becomes a blurred mess of difficult to read random pixels. On a nice photo background, it's just dimmed. On text, it feels like you're losing your mind and your literacy. Your ability to read is going away.

And Windows 95 just wants to know...

what scared me as a kid was this:

The thought of this spontaneously appearing on a computer screen in my bedroom in the middle of the night was horrifying.

(I was an anxious kid.)

I think the ambiguity of what "safe" means in this context did it for me. Does this mean that there are unsafe times to turn off your computer? Would turning off the computer when this image wasn't on the display hurt me??

You'd really hate my customized version, then.

What- what year is all this from? That’s terrifying

The XP in the OP is from 2001, and Windows 95 is from, barely, 1995

i told my friend’s dad that he was hot (it was in context with the conversation, he was complaining that he was feeling old, etc), and he said a very genuine thank you and the conversation moved on to other topic, my friend was now talking about something else entirely when his dad goes

“i think if i were born in your generation i might have been bisexual”

and friend got kinda mad at me lmao

i've already said this before but the way people talk about heaven and angels in this fandom is so warped. angels aren't inherently bad but heaven as an institution absolutely is! sorry! They're evangelicals! they're introduced as militaristic doomsday cultists who wish to sacrifice all of humanity so they can reach their ideal paradise. if you failed to pick up on the real world parallels that's on you.
