Jonathan Toews hates his nickname, one that evolved from Mr. Serious into Captain Serious when he started wearing the “C” last season. “I like to whine about it,” Toews said with a smile protruding into his Wolverine-like beard. “I guess the guys think I’m a serious person and I’m one of the guys they like to pick on a little bit and get under my skin because they get a reaction out of me.” The guys don’t just like to pick on Toews. According to the affable Adam Burish, who definitely should not be trusted to keep any team secrets, it’s easy target practice to go after the captain. “Off the ice we pick on him quite a bit,” Burish said. “He’s easy to mess with.” When they’re on the road, Burish said the players love to take Toews’ hotel room keys away from him. They get a kick out of messing up his room. “He just loses his mind,” Burish said. “When we order him an extra breakfast in the morning, he loses his mind over that.” Lately, Toews’ playoff beard has served as fodder for teammates such as Burish. “All he can grow is those Wolverine sideburns, but he’s like, ‘What do you want me to do? I can’t do anything about it,’” Burish said. “We keep going at him and he gets really upset.” What about his occasional wardrobe malfunctions? “He’ll show up wearing some ugly T-shirt one day and we’re like, ‘What are you wearing, Johnny? You make all this money, you’re the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, dress a little nicer,’” Burish said. “He’s like, ‘Oh, shut up. What do you know about dressing nicer? Look at me, I look good today.’ “It’s little things we nitpick at and he gets really fired up.”

According to teammates Toews would address the media—a captain’s duty—but then stay in his equipment for another 20 or 30 minutes, mute, processing the game. “I’d shower, get my suit on, be ready to leave, and he’d still be there in full gear,” Burish says. “I’d say, ‘Jonathan, let it go, it’s all right.’ He’d say, ‘That’s not how a captain is supposed to play.’ I’d say, ‘You want to catch dinner, the guys are going?’ and he’d say, ‘I don’t deserve to go.’”
