Turning Sutter into Fehr and cap space would’ve been good work from Rutherford. Turning him into Fehr, Bonino, Clendening and swapping a third-round pick for a second-round pick at the cost of $600,000 against the cap was great work.
A bigger-picture way of looking at it: in the last month, Rutherford has added one of the best right wings in the league (Phil Kessel), more top-nine options in Fehr and Bonino, in the process upgrading at 3C without giving up an asset better than 2014 first-rounder Kasperi Kapanen and by taking on $5.1 million in cap space. That’s impressive, and given how Pittsburgh’s issues last season went beyond simply needing a first-line winger, it was necessary.
