Skinny Sisk and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
Two of the reasons that Hitler lost the war. – caption of a photo of Winters and Speirs from Winters’ war memoir
probably my favorite off-screen pictures lmao
Luz notices it first. He notices everything and most of the men pick up on Winters and Nix from the beginning, but this? This is something else entirely. It’s subtle, so subtle that he thinks he’s reading too much into it. Speirs, whether from personal preference or to keep up appearances for morale, never really connected with any of them men, not like Lip. Lip was a leader, as well as one, of the men. Speirs was a leader through and through. Both of them, however, were rocks upon which the men knew they could lean whenever they needed. Both infectious and contagious. From Speirs, the men gained strength and bravery and from Lip they gained compassion and courage. Luz could see how the two of them latched onto one another so quickly. Toye tells him he’s crazy when he first tells him, but after Luz points out that Speirs doesn’t touch anyone as much or as long as Lip, Toye shuts up. After that, Luz watches them more closely and he notices how much more the two men act and react like the other. The both have a low tolerance for bullshit, argue fiercely for what’s best for the men regardless of the consequences, and take loss and hardships of the battle to heart. Above all else, Luz notices the way Speirs and Lip look at one another. It makes him happy and terrified. No one is sure when the war will end, if it ever does, and he know, knows, that the loss of either man could, not only destroy the other, but the entire company. Luz has seen the war take away so much, if it took one of them, he’s not sure who would be able to survive it.
