Day 2: Flesh

938 words

Characters: Webber, Wilson, (Maxwell mentioned)

Starvetober prompts by @crazysnor1ax

Webber and Wilson have the same hands.

My original idea for this prompt was to talk about the body horror of one's flesh being replaced by Them on the throne, but I decided that I didn't want to be sad today. Instead, take some familial fluff about one's flesh being replaced by Them!

My DST OC :) I've always wanted more animal husbandry mechanics in Don't Starve, and the idea here is that you would get to do stuff like that with Welby, at the cost of hostile creatures having increased range of aggro. Something like that. I don't really know how it would be implemented in a game sense, honestly, I'm just dreaming.

walter rambles - fear & disabilities

footnotes under the cut

the first thing you learn about walter is that he is "the fearless". it is his defining characteristic, and while theoretically you could change parts of him and still have the same character, this is an immutable aspect of who he is as a person. he is not afraid of anything.

well, except for getting hurt.

and i think we take for granted just how disabling this actually is. he is shown time and time again to have absolutely zero sense of danger. his opening short shows him approaching a deerclops, even while it shows clear signs of aggression. he wants to play with the hounds (1). when he gets hit by the dark, he's surprised because he genuinely thinks that charlie doesn't want to hurt him (2).

it's definitely a good thing this kid entered the constant once everyone was already all together, because i genuinely don't think he would be able to take care of himself alone. while it is true he is a pinetree pioneer, and in that sense he is trained for wilderness survival, he simply lacks the common sense necessary.

imagine what that would be like on a day-to-day basis for a moment. whether to be that person or someone who cares about them. i do childcare, and these kids DO understand danger, and yet they get hurt all the time. even with supervision, even in a safe environment. his quotes time and time again suggest he actively wants to approach dangerous things (3), befriend them even while they're actively attacking him (4). he would get himself killed and not even realise it.

while the game itself doesn't really explore this, i think it's something really interesting to think about when considering walter as character. no doubt he's a smart and capable kid, but he needs other people to keep an eye out for him.

I always name my Beefalo "Sauerkraut".

[IMAGE ID: A multimedia artwork of Wilson from Don't Starve beside a tamed beefalo. They are drawn in a simple, sketchy style with oil pastels. His beefalo has red bows on its horn and tail. They are in a field of grass made out of washi tape, and above them is text reading "I LOVE YOU" made with stickers. There are hearts doodled around the two. END ID]
