shelley duvall in the shining (1980) dir. stanley kubrick
“Much of The Shining speaks so well to domestic abuse and its patterns: claustrophobia, confinement, misdirection. Which version of events is real? Who gave Danny the bruises on his neck? We’re encouraged, repeatedly, to doubt ourselves and our instincts—and this is the premise on which abuse rests. Even after we learn that Jack once dislocated Danny’s shoulder, he insists, “I love you more than anything else in the whole world. I would never do anything to hurt you. Never. You know that, don’t you?” It’s a familiar pattern: inflicting pain, and hoping that the expression of love withdraws its effects—or, worse, makes the action justified.”

SHELLEY DUVALL as WENDY TORRANCE in THE SHINING (1980)
The Shining, 1980.
I dreamed that I, that I killed you and Danny. But I didn’t just kill ya. I cut you up in little pieces. Oh my God. I must be losing my mind. The Shining (1980) dir. Stanley Kubrick

oh fuck oh shit [writes an essay about how shelley duvall’s role as wendy torrance is the best final girl in horror]
ok maybe i did write an essay, it’s also midnight and i didn’t put all my thoughts together so sorry if doesn’t make a lot of sense.
wendy’s character is usually just reduced to just her screaming in the bathroom scene while jack’s character is all about the “descent into madness” and all that shit. if i ever see a list of like “the top final girls in horror movies” i hardly ever see her mentioned. but like!!! she needs to be on those kinds of lists!!!
obviously if you’ve seen the shining (i do not have the time, energy or want to actually read a stephen king book), you see wendy go through so much suffering with jack even before all the crazy ghost shit happens. she’s constantly trying to be the perfect wife and perfect mom. we know there’s been a past incident of jack hurting danny and having a bad temper and yknow being an all around piece of shit. so wendy, especially at the overlook, practically steers clear of him after the different instances of him snapping at her.
for a horror movie, she’s literally the best mom. her main concern is always her son. while jack’s going off the rails inside at his typewriter, she’s running through the hedge maze with danny and playing in the snow when it first snows.
when danny walks into the lobby with bruises on his neck, wendy’s obviously concerned and trying to ask him what’s wrong. when she realizes he’s so shaken up he can’t speak (and suspecting that jack had hurt him), she takes him back to their room where he’s safe and can watch cartoons to calm down. despite what jack wants, she wants to take danny to a doctor cause, i don’t know, she’s a normal mom concerned about her child.
when jack starts spiraling and wendy is processing the severity of their situation, she starts planning how to get danny and herself down the mountain with or without jack.
when danny starts saying redrum over and over and wendy tries to wake him up, she’s not rough with him or shakes him, she still tries to remain collected enough for her son. even when ‘tony’ tells her that danny isn’t there, she just pulls him close and strokes his hair. she most definitely could’ve snapped but with all the shit with jack going on and the fact that she’s concerned for her young son’s health, she just comforts him.
when she goes to confront jack about leaving, she leaves danny with his favorite cartoons and makes sure he doesn’t see her take a bat because she didn’t want to scare him anymore than he’s already been.
when wendy finds out that the entire time they’ve been at that damn hotel her husband’s been writing the same sentence over and over and over again, and jack starts crazy rambling to her and threatening her, she knocks his ass out bitch!! AND locks him in the freezer!! she knows it might not hold him long but at least long enough for her to get danny and leave!
when jack starts axing down the door and she has to think fast cause literally both their lives are at stake, she gets danny out first and tells him to go hide cause yknow that’s a good mom. and if you weren’t convinced she’s not just a scream queen, she cuts jack’s hand when he tries to unlock the door.
she gets to the snowcat, grabs danny and hauls ass and leaves her piece of shit husband to freeze to death lost in the maze! jesus even the fucking ghost of the dude who murdered his wife had said “your wife is stronger than we imagined, more resourceful” like hell yeah she is!!
and don’t even get me STARTED about how shelley duvall deserves recognition for that role considering it took such a toll on her mentally and physically to film no thanks to stanley kubrick or jack nicholson
my favorite horror movies + the cure playing on the background (on youtube)
If someone offered me the Overlook hotel caretaker job i would take it
rip to jack torrance but im different
redrum
