Hi there! -waves- I’m a mod at Walt Disney Confessions, and I thought I’d let you know why Mulan is considered a Disney Princess.

[The current Disney Princess lineup consists of: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Tiana, & Rapunzel is to be added.]

#1- You don’t have to be royalty to be part of the Disney lineup. Pocahontas is on there too, and despite people saying she’s the daughter of a chief, the Powhatans functioned as a democracy so she’s as much a princess as Barack Obama’s daughters are.

#2- Her movie did well & she sings her own song. This is a STAPLE to be in a Disney Princess movie. You don’t sing your own song, you don’t get in. (However, I see that changing if Merida (from Pixar’s Brave) is added to the Disney Princess lineup, because as far as I know she doesn’t sing. Then some of you may say “Well, neither does Jane or Kida or [insert name here], but sorry, their time has passed. Disney makes these decisions before the move even comes out.)

#3- She appeals to a demographic. She is Chinese, so she appeals to the “asian” demographic. Disney has nothing to gain adding Jane [sorry to keep using her as an example] to the list because we already have 6 white princesses.

#4- She is the main character of her film and/or she is a princess. Every single Disney Princess is the lead character of her film- with the exception of Jasmine, but she appeals to the non-white demographic.

#5- Her movie is mostly appropriate to all ages. This is a reason why Esmeralda is not on the list, also having to do with the fact that she is not the main character and she is very sexual, which would raise a lot of complaints from parents, not to mention Hunchback of Notre Dame is not considered appropriate for really young viewers, such as 6 year olds, who are at a prime age for loving Disney Princesses.

#6- She is not an animal. There are no animals in the Disney Princess lineup, and I highly doubt there will ever be.
