Swedish Electronic Music Awards 1998
On April 4, 1998 (20 years ago today), I and some friends took the coach from Uppsala where I lived at the time to Gothenburg for the first Swedish Electronic Music Awards festival, SEMA for short. The weather was beautiful and sunny for the first half of the trip, but around the time we passed Skara the clouds were gathering; when we reached Alingsås it was snowing, and the snowfall only got heavier and wetter as we approached Gothenburg. When we got there the weather was completely awful. This turned out to be important later.
This festival was held at Kåren, the student union’s building, and had a pretty nice lineup:
- Cat Rapes Dog
- Covenant
- Dress Code (a synthpop band that I can’t remember who they were; I only have two photos)
- FKK Jugend (later Diskodiktator; this was their debut gig, I think?)
- In the Nursery
- Komputer
- Lazer Stefanz (Pontus from Spetsnaz and two others)
- Project-X
- Saft
- Sista mannen på jorden
- Vacuum
It was also an awards show, with Alexander Hofman from S.P.O.C.K as the MC, but I’m buggered if I can remember who won what; I can’t find it online and can’t be bothered to dig out my old paper magazines. At any rate I have photos of EnCounter, a synthpop band from Umeå in the north, receiving an award for something...
