I work in a courthouse. I’m in court every day, listening to proceedings. And the sheer amount of violent rapists we see in court is astounding, especially when you consider the statistics saying that most assaults go unreported and without an arrest.

In my state, the penalties for rape, even rape of a minor, rarely ever exceed 10 years. And in fact, most of the time that offenders are given a 10-year sentence, it comes with the caveat that the sentence will be suspended after serving 3 or 4 years. So it’s not even a real 10-year sentence.

Many of the offenders I see each day are repeat offenders. They get convicted of sexual assault, serve their 3 years (or less), take some stupid course on “rape prevention,” and then are let free to do it all over again.

And frankly, after the sheer number of times I’ve seen victims or their family members struggling to read through an impact statement in court while the rapist stands there and smirks and rolls their eyes at them, knowing they will barely face any consequences for their actions…. Like, yeah, fucking castrate them, man. Because what we’re doing now isn’t working. And countless innocents are paying the price for our justice system’s failure to act.

Question.

Who, right now, does the far right consider to be rapists and pedophiles? The answer is trans people. And did you know that castration is required in some countries before a trans person can transition? And you bet any trans person accused of rape isn’t getting a minimum sentence.

Castration is a horrible violation of a person’s body. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Sure, what’s happening now isn’t working… but replacing jail time with mutilation isn’t the right answer.
