outdoor cat defenders really are simply some of the most Delusional people on the planet, like you can list fact after fact all with verified sources about how bad it is to let cats outside for both them & the environment around them and people will cover their ears and be like "umm not my frumpkins he knows not to play in traffic & he has magical resistance to coyotes and disease"

Something all the outdoor cat defenders in the notes are forgetting is that if your cat is roaming outside, they have a massive chance of catching FIV. It’s spread through bites and scratches, so if your cat gets into a fight with another cat, congrats, they’re at high risk for FIV

As a vet, honestly the replies are arguments I see every day when people bring in their cats who are now on death’s door. The average lifespan for outdoor cats is diminutive compared to indoor cats. And it’s not just predation and cars—though I’ve had to euthanize plenty of cats mauled by both. It’s not knowing what your cat *does* or how they live. It’s not knowing they’ve eaten something toxic—chemicals, bait traps, garbage, flowers. It’s not knowing that they haven’t peed in two days and are blocked. It’s not knowing that their drinking habits have changed and they’re showing early presenting signs of diseases like kidney problems, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism. It’s the asshole down the block who uses them for target practice. It’s the unknowing old lady who takes in a wandering stray. Do you know how we do a lot of our diagnoses? History. Do you know how many outdoor cat owners can answer the exceptionally basic “what’s his diet like? Is he doing okay in the litter box? Does he have a habit of eating things he shouldn’t? Any fights with other animals or other injuries?” 1 in a 100. It’s not just coyotes, it’s not just cars or bird populations. There are a hundred factors people refuse to see or just simply do not.

IMO, blurring the lines between “I’m defending them because they’re right” and “I’m defending them because you’re taking this too far” is step numero uno to cutting down the very existence of fair trial and democracy–even in places where saying that might seem a little dramatic. 

Mob mentality is extremely strong in humans and it’s also extremely dangerous. Mobs don’t think things through. Mobs kill and they destroy and they can’t be reasoned with. Someone trying to calm a mob down isn’t someone defending the ~problematic party~ It’s time we re-learn that.

“even IF the guy did whatever you’re accusing them of, mob violence isn’t a fair or proportionate response, and you guys need to go home and mind your own fucking business” is a thing absolutely no one likes to hear but frequently needs to be said regardless
