“What is bad for the heart is good for the art. The terrible irony of our lives as artists.”

The idea is to be whispering, and not to gain the attention from the flock, but to get attention from the individuals. That's why I relate it to whispering. It's nothing that you can put on a big scale; you can't get sheep to attend to it. You need to have people that can stand for themselves. It is important to have a lot of space for yourself to be able to grow strong branches, which can stand in the most extreme surroundings. It reflects back to the old Norse songs and the idea of having one's own area where you are King. Personally I need nature surrounding me – like mountains, trees and rivers – in order to relax, to learn and to teach. All this is very important for my inner self. I think that Christianity has made people afraid of solitude; afraid of the idea of being alone.

I'll read my books and I'll drink coffee and I'll listen to music, and I'll bolt the door.

“Go into the arts. I’m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”

— Kurt Vonnegut
