...nine states have introduced multiple stand-alone bills that would grant teachers the authority to specifically present climate change as controversial, regardless of national science standards. Most of these measures have failed—for now. But two have passed, in Louisiana and Tennessee.
Meanwhile, critics worry that teachers like Hopkins, who present the topic as a debate, are doing a disservice to young minds.
“As a science teacher, she is teaching a mythology,” says Doug Lombardi, a science education researcher at Temple University who has been working with Hopkins to change her approach. “There isn’t a climate change controversy, not from a scientific perspective.”
It's not just a matter of scientific accuracy—at stake may be the ability of future generations to deal with creeping temperatures, sea level rise and the other consequences of climate change.

This is another way of saying that Paul Ryan is a nut. His ideological fantasies prevent him from accepting even basic scientific facts. He is, to be sure, a lucid nut, rather than a raving nut who accosts passersby on street corners. Ryan has spent his life imbibing the tenants of right-wing-movement thought, and he can apply the concepts he has learned to nearly any topic.

I can't think of a worse conflict on of interest than David Koch sitting on the Board of Trustees at Boston's PBS station, WGBH. Join me in telling WGBH: get the radical climate denying Koch off the board of WGBH!

Did you know that David Koch, who along with his brother Charles has spent millions on climate change denial, currently sits on the Board of Trustees at Boston’s PBS affiliate, WGBH?

It’s hard to believe, but the nation’s biggest financial backer of right-wing causes helps oversee the station that brings us educational classics like Frontline and NOVA. Until earlier this year, Koch was also on the board of New York’s PBS affiliate, WNET, but he resigned after a New Yorker exposé uncovered the embarrassing revelation that WNET staff refused to air a documentary critical of the Koch brothers, fearing that doing so would jeopardize a major planned contribution from David Koch.

The WNET episode was a disturbing example of how even the presence of someone like Koch can lead to dangerous self-censorship in our public television stations. We have no idea if the same kind of self-censorship is happening at WGBH. The station insists that there are strong firewalls to prevent that sort of thing from happening. Until recently, so did WNET.

But behind the very real possibility that Koch’s presence affects WGBH’s content is an even larger question for WGBH and its members: Why should it be acceptable for a radical climate-denier like David Koch to be on the board of a well-respected institution like WGBH, which is dedicated to educating the public?

The answer is simple: it shouldn’t be acceptable.

The world is already feeling the painful impacts of climate disasters like Superstorm Sandy and this summer’s wildfires. It’s time for important societal institutions like WGBH to draw a line and say that lying to the American public about the reality of climate change is unacceptable, and we will not be associated with it.

The New Yorker piece and Koch’s resignation from the WNET board have created a major opening to reconsider the relationship between public institutions and climate deniers like Koch. That’s why Forecast the Facts members are seizing this opening and mobilizing to get Koch off WGBH's board. The first step is to gather as many petition signatures as possible to deliver to the full Board of Trustees at their October 9th meeting.

Right Wing Australian PM dissolves the Climate Commission

*Newly elected conservative government in Australia scraps the Climate Commission* Here in America, only 6% of all scientists are Republican, mostly because conservative dogma is the antithesis of rational thinking. Looks like it’s the same all over the world. Closed minded, anti-science conservatives can’t even accept the evidence for Climate Change, or perhaps they do and are just whoring themselves out too much to greedy corporations to care.  Either way, this IS a partisan battle. If you care about science and the environment, get involved. Fight back.

Google's motto is "Don't Be Evil," but on July 11, Google hosted a $250-$2500 per plate fundraiser for one of the worst climate deniers in the world: Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK). Google has been a corporate leader in fighting climate pollution. Its support for liars like Inhofe is a glaring mistake.

Sen. Inhofe has claimed: "CO2 does not cause catastrophic disasters ... actually, it would be beneficial to our environment and the economy."

Google chairman Eric Schmidt has said: "You can lie about the effects of climate change, but eventually you'll be seen as a liar."

UPDATE: Google went ahead with their fundraiser and refused our petitions in D.C. We're planning a delivery at Google headquarters soon. Please sign and help us get to 15k signatures before we take our concerns directly to Mountain View.

Inside the Saddledome: Photos reveal scale of the damage in Calgary Flames’ flood-ravaged home The Saddledome, home to and managed by the Calgary Flames, suffered major damage as flood waters swept through the city over the weekend. At the flood’s height, water reached the eighth row of the arena. Everything below the eighth row of the Saddledome is a write-off, the team says, and the federal Conservative Party have postponed their convention slated to take place in the city the weekend after the Stampede. Now every time I read about fires in Colorado or rising seas or Canadian tar sands or Native villages already being washed away in Alaska or preparations for the next hurricane that slams into New York City, a slightly modified version of Buchanan's vicious line about AIDS plays in my head. We have declared war on nature, and now nature is exacting an awful retribution. We have declared war on the water we drink and the air we breathe. We have declared war on the forests and the oceans. We have declared war on the honeybees. All of us have—liberal, conservative, independent. Some of us, however, are ready to start making the changes that must be made if we want to survive in this world. But the conservatives, the poor conservatives, they're like those faggots in gay bars in 1983. They're standing around, drinks in hand, insisting that the conflagration currently engulfing them—the conflagration that is engulfing us all—isn't happening. That it can't be happening. But just as denial and anger and shooting messengers didn't save those gay men in Chicago's bars in 1983, denial and anger won't save Colorado's ranchers in 2013. Nature is exacting an awful retribution.

Kansas, I love your sense of humor.
It seems like every time the Sunflower State pops up in my news feed, it’s for something like this: House Bill No. 2366, a proposed law that would make it illegal to use “public funds to promote or implement sustainable development.”
Kansas, the place where I spent my formative years skipping school to go fishing in farm ponds, is populated with thoughtful stewards of the nation’s breadbasket. It also has a habit of turning reason on its head. The state famously dropped evolution from its educational curriculum in 1999, along with the age of the Earth and the history of the universe, for good measure.
Now the state’s “Committee on Energy and Environment” is proposing a law that would prohibit spending on anything that won’t set Kansas on a course to self-destruction. House Bill No. 2366 would ban all state and municipal funds for anything related to “sustainable development,” which it defines as: “development in which resource use aims to meet human needs while preserving the environment so that these needs can be met not only in the present, but also for generations to come.

I just can’t….

An ad campaign by the corporate front-group the Heartland Institute features the face of Ted Kaczynski alongside the phrase “I still believe in Global Warming. Do you?” Heartland is funded by Microsoft, Pfizer, and other major corporate sponsors, and I just signed a petition for them to pull their support of Heartland over these despicable, anti-science ads. Will you join me?

http://sumofus.org/campaigns/heartland/?sub=taf

The Heartland Institute has a long history of playing dirty. Last year, Heartland was caught trying to sneak industry-written pro-coal propaganda into elementary schools, and previously they have acted as hired guns for the cigarette industry, distributing a paper titled “Joe Camel is Innocent!”.

These corporations have no business supporting Heartland. Join me in calling for them to stop funding these climate change denial smears

Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen has said that the Chevy Volt will fail and that anybody who buys the car is an idiot. Not only that, de Nysschen has lumped proponents of any type of electric car into a category of “intellectual elite who want to show what enlightened souls they are.”

New Marketing Campaign for German Imports: appeal to the narcissism of contrarian climate change deniers to sell cars. Cars sold by pricks for pricks.
