On Monday, WHO-TV reported that students at an Iowa high school had posted a video online mocking the involuntary movements of classmate Levi Null, a 13-year old with Asperger’s syndrome. “People tell me to run into things and I don’t really like it,” said Null, who also has ADHD. “And I tell them that I don’t want to and they just laugh at me, whenever I do it.”
On Thursday, it was revealed that the report had triggered an outpouring of support — for the accused bullies.
Some of those defending the teens who posted the video have turned to shaming the autistic victim. Levi Weatherly, a parent of one of the accused teens insisted his child was not wholly in the wrong. “Three-fourths of this stuff he brings on himself,” he said, “and probably a fourth of it is bullying that shouldn’t be going on.” One implied that he was asking for it: “This kid has done things to get people mad that I think he could probably control.”
But this sentiment betrays a basic ignorance of autism. According to advocacy group Autism Speaks, autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are “characterized by social-interaction difficulties, communication challenges and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors.” Like Levi Null’s Asperger’s syndrome, his repetitive movements and difficulties socializing are not voluntary, and he cannot turn them off at will.
Let's call the churches in the area, tell them this story then ask them what the hell is wrong with them.
If you don't post the name of the judge in whose court this was said in and the name of the attorney who said it, you're just jacking people up with righteous indignation. It's not much better than trolling. Same goes for a kid who you report being bullied or otherwise discriminated against and you don't post contact information for the school principal and the members / trustees of the board of education of the district that school is in.
I don't know why I have to scold Tumblr about this — it should be obvious. Don't get mad, get active. Or better yet, get mad and tell the right people about it who can make a different for the person being afflicted with injustice.
Sunlight makes a great disinfectant. That's why I state that names and addresses need to be named: license plates should be shown with bigoted bumper stickers, reports of bullying need to name the school and the city that the school is in.
Awkward Mittens.
Profile of the Sociopath has, in part, these traits:
- Glibness and Superficial Charm
- Manipulative and Conning They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
- Grandiose Sense of Self Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."
- Callousness/Lack of Empathy Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.
- Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.
- Irresponsibility/Unreliability Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.
- Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.
Calling the presumptive GOP Nominee to become President a sociopath might be hyberbolic as some of the non-sense that right-wing talking heads grind out. The only difference I make between the voices that fester on A.M. radio and myself is that I was paying attention in high school debate class; I backed up my argument that Willard Mitt Romney is a sociopath with supporting evidence.
Bullied Gay Teen Brings Stun Gun To School, Faces Expulsion
And nowhere is there a mention of the district that failed this kid. No link to a page of the phone numbers and addresses of members of this Board of Education of that district which lets hatred fester in the schools they allege to care for.
If you want to actually make a difference for LGBT kids in schools, and you need to light a fire under the asses of the members of the Board of Education who failed the kid, who placated the bigots they represent that let the kid get pushed around.
I've been cranky about activist things not being effective lately. With that caveat, I'll thank you to keep your outrage about kids being bullied in schools to yourself and not share it with me or anyone else with an internet connection and a telephone who could apply pressure on the responsible parties to make a difference if you're not going to find the contact information for that Board of Education.
14-year-old JAMES RODEMEYER, in a Facebook posting on September 9; days later, he would commit suicide over anti-gay slurs directed at him at school and on the Internet.
Rodemeyer taped a message four months ago as part of the “It Gets Better Project,” saying, in part, “Love yourself and you’re set. I promise you, it does get better.”
This is what happens when our leaders allow people to think, and accept, that it’s okay to hate others based on their sexuality, their gender, their race, their ethnicity, their religious beliefs.
This is why we stand up for others. To prevent good people like James from dying at the hands of ignorant, cruel, bullying brutes.
Tumblr’s thoughts and prayers are with James’s family for their terrible loss.
What will the school district that let James down do in the future do to insure that this never happens to another child?
