Dykes, 43, brings 18 years of collegiate coaching experience to Berkeley. He spent the past three seasons as head coach at Louisiana Tech, where he compiled a 22-15 record and won 16 of 17 regular season games during one stretch over the 2011 and '12 seasons. This past year, Dykes guided Louisiana Tech to a 9-3 mark and reached as high as No. 18 in the USA Today Poll and No. 19 in the AP Top 25 after jumping out to a 9-1 start.
During his years at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., Dykes engineered a turnaround for the program that improved all three seasons under his leadership. The Bulldogs were 4-8 the year before he arrived in 2009, then proceeded to finish 5-7, 8-5 and 9-3 in successive campaigns. In 2011, Louisiana Tech started just 1-4, and then won seven consecutive games to clinch the Western Athletic Conference title - the team's first conference championship in a decade - and a berth in the Poinsettia Bowl. Dykes was named the WAC Coach of the Year for the effort.
Dykes, the son of former longtime Texas Tech coach Spike Dykes, boasts a resume that includes additional stops in the Pac-12, Big 12 and SEC where he served under such head coaches as Mike Stoops (Arizona), Mike Leach (Texas Tech) and Hal Mumme (Kentucky).

"This was an extraordinarily difficult decision, one that required a thorough and thoughtful analysis of a complex set of factors," Barbour said. "Ultimately, I believed that we needed a change in direction to get our program back on the right track. Cal football is integral to our department and our university, and its influence can be felt well beyond the walls of Memorial Stadium. The program clearly serves as an important part of the connective tissue that binds our community together, and it is imperative that Cal football be recognized as a leader in competitive success, academic achievement and community engagement.

The story of Aaron Rodgers is even more familiar to Cal fans. Tedford found him by chance, laboring to get noticed at Butte Community College, on a recruiting trip to check out tight end Garrett Cross. Unheralded and anonymous then, Rodgers now holds the record for the highest career passer rating in NFL history. Think of some of Cal's best over the last few years. Center Alex Mack, a Pro Bowler with the Browns, was a two-star recruit. Running back Justin Forsett was too. So was safety Thomas DeCoud. Now, he's a fan favorite and starter for the Atlanta Falcons. Coming out of high school, linebacker Desmond Bishop wasn't on anyone's radar; he went to City College of San Francisco before catching Cal's eye. This is not to say Cal fans can't be excited about the Bears' catch. To have as miserable a season as they did and still recruit well says a lot (mostly about Tosh Lupoi). But don't jump for joy because you think the program is saved. Signing Day is just another square on the calendar.

The way that Cal makes teams is by finding diamonds in the rough.

the stats on the wide receiver

While senior quarterback Kevin Riley will be held up to the microscope for his season, some of that pressure will be lifted if Riley can build a rapport with Lagemann. With Lagemann being the possession receiver it could open the passing game up for the likes of (WR Marvin) Jones and (WR Keenan) Allen, but also create huge holes for running back Shane Vereen.

Note to self: look for articles about Cal's running game
