Funeral monuments in the necropolis at Pompeii
The ancient Romans buried their dead along the roads outside the walls of their cities. Pride of place went to the tombs nearest to the gates of the city, where prominent citizens had their monuments. At Pompeii, the area near the necropolis was one of the earliest places to be uncovered and has now fallen into decay.
