Act 2 of Princess Ida in a nutshell:
Hilarion & Florian: CYRIL, NO!
Cyril: CYRIL YES.
Yeomen: When maiden loves, she sits and sighs Gondoliers: When a merry maiden marries, sorrow goes and pleasure tarries
Yeomen: It is sung with a sigh and a tear in the eye Gondoliers: …let our tears be tears of laughter. Every sigh that finds a vent be a sigh of sweet content!
Yeomen: …yellow, bilious, jaundiced jealousy. Gondoliers: and Jealousy yellow, unfortunate fellow, we drown in the shimmering blue
A parodos!
A parodos!
A most ingenious parodos!
fellas, if your girl:
- knows the kings of england
- quotes the fights historical, from marathon to waterloo in order categorical
- is very good at integral and differential calculus
- knows the scientific names of beings animalculous
- knows our mythic history, King Arthur's and Sir Caradoc's
- answers hard acrostics
- has a pretty taste for paradox
- quotes in elegiacs all the crimes of Heliogabalus
- In conics can floor peculiarities parabolous
- can tell undoubted Raphaels from Gerard Dows and Zoffanies
- knows the croaking chorus from The Frogs of Aristophanes
- can hum a fugue of which she's heard the music's din afore
- and whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore
- can write a washing bill in Babylonic cuneiform
- and tell you ev'ry detail of Caractacus's uniform
- knows what is meant by "mamelon" and "ravelin"
- can tell at sight a Mauser rifle from a Javelin
then she ain't your girl, she's the very model of a modern major-general!
I cannot stand the parodies of modern major general, they're overdone and simply not as good as the original. They've done them about everything, whatever topic, big or small.
And when i notice one of them my eyes will always start to roll.
The diction's always slurry when they rush the complicated words, and adding many fricatives will turn it so cacophonous. The slanted rhymes are silly and they keep just making more and more, please someone stop the parodies of modern major general.
The scanning of the lyrics in the meter is unbearable, they emphazise the syllables in ways that are untenable, in short in matters musical, prosodic and ephemeral, i cannot stand the parodies of modern major general!
Anybody else ever start maniacally laughing because of how much you love Gilbert and Sullivan?? Just me? I’ll see myself out.
Cackle, cackle... all cackle
Cackle! CACKLE CACKLE
That one time last year I was in a production of yeomen of the guard and started creating memes enjoy them
[heavy metal screaming] HEY-DI HEY-DI MISERY ME LACK-A-DAY-DEE
Friendships may come and go, love may die, a thousand lifetimes may pass and fade.
But every word of every Gilbert and Sullivan song you’ve ever heard?
They last forever.
Buttercup: Introduces herself as Buttercup.
Buttercup: Sings a whole damned song beginning: ‘I’m called little Buttercup’ about how she is called Buttercup.
Buttercup: NEVER MENTIONS ANOTHER NAME.
Also Buttercup: I’m called Little Buttercup – dear Little Buttercup, Though I could never tell why. 🤷♀️
TELL US YOUR NAME WOMAN AND WE’LL USE IT.
Aha, now it’s my turn to bother ye with questions! You mentioned HMS Pinafore, so I’ll stick with that.
1) What’s your favourite song in Pinafore?
2) Who’s your favourite character in Pinafore?
3) If you happened to be in a production of Pinafore, which part would you most like to play? In this case, assuming that you could sing/act any part perfectly.
P.S. May I ask your opinions on Princess Ida?
Hurrah! How lovely to be asked questions! Now to answer them…
1) You’ve kicked off with a damn difficult one here. Yet in many ways an exceedingly easy one. So many honourable mentions yet one clear, clear winner. I adore ‘Never Mind the Why and Wherefore’ also ‘He is an Englishman’ and ‘I am the Captain of the Pinafore’ bites at the ankles of the winner, which is… ‘When I was a lad’! What a beaut.
2) Again, what internal struggles rage in my heart! I shall have to say Sir Joseph Porter I’M SORRY EVERYONE ELSE! (EXEPT FOR YOU DICK DEADEYE. HATE YOU WITH ALL MY SOUL) just for being such a little silly.
3) Josephine. Josephine all the day and way. Never mind the why and wherefore indeed!
P.S.: Princess Ida is lovely though not quite my favourite. I haven’t seen it in simply eons though so would love a recommendation of somewhere to refresh myself!
Thank you so much for asking! What a fun game.
Hello! I thought I would bother you with a question. You’ve expressed an interest in The Gondoliers so I thought I would ask:
1. Is it your favourite Gilbert and Sulivan?
2. What’s your favourite song from there and, bonus: from all of G+S’ works?
3. Who’s your favourite character from The Gondoliers (similar bonus applies).
Thank you, and sorry to interrupt.
P.S.: I am pleased to have yet concealed my own pet obsession i.e.: Pinafore and wanted to ask your opinion on that.
P.P.S.: have a lovely day!
Thank you ever so for the ask!
1) It’s (currently) my second favourite, with my favourite being Princess Ida, but it has my favourite aesthetic, if that makes sense. A lot of set designs/costume designs I see of it remind me of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang for some reason, which is my childhood film, and therefore the aesthetics of the Gondoliers feels somewhat nostalgic to me. Also I just really like Italy.
2) My favourite song from The Gondoliers is In a Contemplative Fashion, simply because Tessa and Gianetta, who have hitherto been typical Gilbert and Sullivan love interest ladies (which there’s nothing at all wrong with), are revealed to be absolutely unhinged when it comes to their husbands, which is both very sweet and very funny. I also really like Dance a Cachucha, List and Learn, and Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes. My favourite overall Gilbert and Sullivan song is Here’s a How-de-do from The Mikado. I have no explanation as to why, I just like it.
3) My favourite Gondoliers character is definitely Gianetta. Who thought such a sweet, soft-sounding soprano would threaten such brutal murder? My favourite Gilbert and Sullivan character is Mr Wells. I love the concept of a sorcerer who owns a sorcery shop, and he didn’t deserve what happened to him. He’s closely followed my Cyril from Princess Ida, who’s closely followed by every character except for Alexis and Fairfax.
As for my opinions on HMS Pinafore, I love it! Josephine is an absolutely charming leading lady, and Sir Joseph’s sisters, cousins, and aunts make up a very fun chorus. And Kind Captain, I’ve Important Information is remarkably sinister.
Every opinion expressed in this post is subject to change in a week.
