EDDIE noticed that Chris had trouble going to sleep, and he also knew that traumatic events could cause disruption weeks after it occurred. When he realized that Christopher wanted Buck, he immediately called the man, despite that it was nearing eleven at night. Honestly, Eddie just wanted his son to feel safe.
A sleepy Buck answered the phone, but immediately perked up when he heard that Chris needed him. He rushed over to the Diaz household and let himself into the house with the key that Eddie gave him a couple months ago.
Buck spotted Chris and Eddie cuddled up on the couch. He crouched down before the two and smiled softly at the boy.
“Hey,” he murmured, “How’re you doin’, Chris?”
“Will you stay?” Christopher asked, his eyes softened and began to plead. “Please don’t leave. I want my Buck.”
Buck smiled softly and took a spot on the couch, next to him. He laid a kiss to Chris’ hair and glanced at Eddie, with an almost endearing expression. To any outsider, they looked like two dads cuddling their son. To Buck, that’s how it felt.
He glanced back down to Chris, “I’m not going anywhere, Chris.”
They sat in the silent house for numerous minutes, and Chris finally relaxed as he snuggled into Buck’s side. Eddie smiled fondly at his boys, but was thankful that Buck was too focused to notice. It took another hanful of minutes until Chris was asleep, and Eddie pulled a blanket over his son.

ABOUT an hour later, both Eddie and Buck had settled in the kitchen with mugs of coffee before them. Eddie couldn’t sleep, knowing his son was in turmoil. He looked down at his mug, and sneaked a sheepish glance at Buck.
“I appreciate you getting here so quick,” Eddie mentioned.
Buck smiled and shook off the feeling that welled inside his chest, “It’s nothing. I love that kid like he’s my own.”
I think I love you. Eddie thought.
He sighed and rubbed at his forehead tiredly. Eddie looked towards Buck again, and the faintest of smiles made home on his lips. Buck looked tired, and like he had been struggling with the same things as Chris. But to Eddie, he looked like home.
“I know,” he nodded, and swallowed nervously. “Buck. . . That day—“
Buck shook his head, “Eds, we don’t need to talk about that day.”
“But we do,” he said grimly, and it made Buck shake with anxiety. Eddie continued, “The way you cared for Chris, and risked your life for him, it made me realize something. I think I love you, Evan.”
Buck only stared at him, his mouth hanging open. How does he respond? He’s only had a crush on his best friends for months now.
“You’re just saying that,” Buck shook his head and tried not to hold onto the hope. “This whole situation has us feeling different things.”
Eddie rolled his eyes, and huffed as he unraveled his hands from the warm coffee cup. He rounded the counter, and placed himself between Buck’s legs as he sat on the stool. His hands were still warm as he cupped Buck’s face and brought him closer for a kiss.
It took Buck a moment to realize what was truly happening. After that, his reaction was instant. His hands found home on Eddie’s waist, and he smiled into the kiss as he deepened it slightly.
The line between best friends and lovers had been blown to smitherines.
“Tell me again that I don’t love you,” Eddie muttered as he broke the kiss. “Bull, and you know it, Evan. I thought I lost you both that night, and I couldn’t handle loosing you both.”
Buck blinked slowly and smiled softly, “You don’t have too.”
Eddie pressed another kiss to his lips, and ran his thumbs over Buck’s cheeks. “Let’s get to bed. You look just as tired as Chris. We can even camp out on the couch with him.”
He dragged the younger man back to the living room and grabbed more blankets. They settled back onto the couch and pulled the recliners, getting comfy underneath the blankets and in each other’s arms. Eddie kissed his son’s forehead before he glanced at Buck, and smiled.
“I’m glad I decided to stay awhile.” Buck admitted.
Eddie agreed, “Me too.”
