Our President of these United States of America has left this tweet up since 5ᴀᴍ Friday morning.

Here is a quote from the article that Trump linked to.

Jack Dorsey ran downstairs and started smashing as many computers as he could, but he did need to ask for some help, as the hammer was pretty heavy. None of the programmers could lift the hammer, either. Eventually, they managed to program a robot to pick up the sledgehammer and smash the servers.

People will say Trump only read the headline and didn’t actually click through to the satirical article. But after his town hall last night where he was talking about Joe Biden having Seal Team 6 killed during a *fake* Osama bin Laden raid (despite all of those Navy SEALs being, ya know, alive), I think it’s possible he did read that article and thought it to be absolutely true.

If the court of public opinion will permit, I have evidence to support my suspicion that the president is actually that stupid

President Donald John Trump has a long history in which he developed a clear pattern of rampant stupidity and I believe him to be immune to satire (as opposed to the coronavirus).

He said stealth fighters are *literally* invisible. Multiple times.

Clearly we have developed Wonder Woman levels of technology.

He said that Hurricane Florence was “one of the wettest we’ve ever seen, from the standpoint of water.“

As opposed to, say, the standpoint of cats.

It was a Wet Ass Purricane.

Of course, we all remember the injecting of bleach.

And sticking UV light up your patoot–which I believe is Dr. Manhattan’s origin story.

The president also has this weird habit of developing what I call “stupidity earworms.” They are foolish notions that no one corrects him on and he keeps repeating over and over. He becomes obsessed and can’t get the siren song of stupid out of his brain.

One example relates to Hillary’s emails. Trump claims that she “acid washed” 33,000 emails.

You might be wondering, “Hey Froggie, what is acid washing?”

Well, it’s a denim treatment that makes you look… SUPER RAD.

As best as I can figure, Trump is talking about the security software called “BleachBit.” It will overwrite your disk drives multiple times with random junk so data cannot be recovered from them. Using software like this is actually standard practice and not that controversial. It’s good security hygiene.

But Trump must have heard “BleachBit” and his broken noodle somehow converted that into “acid wash.” I think he literally believes that Hillary went into a server room and started pouring acid all over everything.

I’m not even sure acid is a great way to destroy servers.

You might just end up making them look… SUPER RAD.

But then there is my absolute favorite example of Trump’s addled brain.

It is his pièce de résistance, from the standpoint of idiocy.

He claimed that… the noise… from windmills… causes cancer.

Not the construction materials. Not the electromagnetic radiation from electricity generation. Not the sun’s UV light that reflects off the blades.

All of which would be only somewhat stupid claims.

No, Trump’s stable genius blew right past somewhat stupid, straight through bigly stupid, and crashed directly into YUGE stupid.

I repeat… he said the *noise* generated by windmills… causes cancer.

He even did an impression of said noise–which I feel like endangered all the people at the rally.

I mean, how does he know his super accurate windmill impression is not a carcinogenic sound? You know how you hear a toxic sound and you grow, ummmm… a melaudioma? A tunemer? An aural blastoma?

Those things are totally real. No need to google it.

He consistently shows he has no regard for the safety of his acolytes.

He won’t wear a mask at rallies despite being infectious. He refuses to accommodate social distancing guidelines. And he will callously amplify dangerous sounds right into everyone’s earballs.

I fear even showing you the clip.

Please verify you have medical insurance before viewing.

May your auditory cancer death be swift and painless.

Do you remember during the debate when Trump censured Joe Biden for saying he needed to be smarter about the pandemic?

Don’t ever use the word smart with me. Don’t ever use that word. Because you know what? There’s nothing smart about you.”  —Donald John Trump, High IQ Man (Woman Person Camera TV)

But I think there is a better quote to sum all of this up. There is a quote from a distinguished educator who demonstrates just how far back this pattern of rampant stupidity goes.

Donald Trump was the dumbest goddamn student I ever had!—William T. Kelley, Wharton Professor [source]

I rest my case.

A lot of people are genuinely terrified about what will happen if Donald Trump wins reelection and it's really weird how some of y'all are acting like everyone begging you to vote for Biden is some privileged, rich, out of touch, neo-liberal when a lot of them are just vulnerable people who don't want to like...die in a brutal civil war or watch all their remaining rights get stripped away by an increasingly authoritarian Republican Party.

I do not know how to express to you how much worse it can get.

NonAmerican perspective here, but like....... do some of you really not see how bad it already is? Look back at 2016 and picture what you thought Trump's America would look like, four years into the future.

Did the 2020 that you predicted back in 2016 look like 197 thousand Americans dead of a virus that your leader deliberately downplayed the severity of for months? Did it look like your entire eastern coast in flames, the air across half the country unbreathable, the skies a hazy orange from the smoke and the glow of the fires, and your president saying "climate change has nothing to do with this"? Did it look like over two thousand missing children, who were taken from their parents by "the authorities" and then lost by those same authorities? Two thousand children in the care of a government agency have gone missing, and has your bossman even commented on it, or has he just continued extolling the dangers of immigrants?

Did the 2020 you imagined look like months of civil unrest, because police murdered yet another black man, and instead of condemning the act, your leader said "the answer to this problem is worse police violence, and to beat the protestors into submission."

Like, fuck me. Do you not see how bad it already is? This is what's happened under Trump in four years, and some of you are really out there going "hm yeah but Biden has weak policies tho." Would Biden take a global pandemic seriously? I suspect he would. Would Biden be open to working to stop climate change? He's already said loads about what he'll do to combat climate change. Would Biden completely fail to address the fact that women are being forcibly sterilised in ICE and children are being assaulted and going missing? I would be really surprised if he did nothing about that. Would Biden react to public outrage over cops murdering a civilian by sending in the national guard to attack peaceful protesters, assault journalists, permanently blind innocent civilians, and pepperspray children in the face? I really doubt it.

But Trump has done all that shit; is still actively doing all that shit, right at this very fucking moment. And some of you won't vote for Biden because you're not really a fan of his????

"Oh, Biden's too moderate for me" BIDEN IS TOO MODERATE, SO YOULL GO WITH DONALD "THERES NO VIRUS," "ITS BECAUSE THEY DIDNT MANAGE THE FORESTS WELL ENOUGH," "IMMIGRANTS ARE CRIMINALS," "SEND IN THE TROOPS" TRUMP INSTEAD?? You wanna let that guy win by default, to get another four fucking years, when he's already done this much damage?? WHAT THE FUCK, GUYS

This is genuinely what I don’t understand. How do you have such a fucking warped perspective on the world that you think not voting is somehow better than voting for Biden. Like, its actually boggles the mind.

Actually, you know what, I know what it is. Its fucking privilege. Its the privilege of every fucking middle class white person on here who thinks they somehow are taking the high horse because, well, both sides are really as as bad as one another. I mean, Biden is 100% a sexual predatory.

Like this is some fucking cult of personality. Like this is some contest about whose side is the most morally high. Maybe y’all are too fucking close to the issue to see the impact Trump has had, so let me spell it out for you.

  • Trump has opened genuine concentration camps, which have left babies alone in cells for days and forcibly castrated people.
  • The Trump administration has openly admitted to collusion and tampering with the previous election with no negative side effect.
  • There has been a steep rise in the number of Nazi/White Nationalist movements in the last four years, to the point where its actually normalised.
  • The Trump administration has had bleed on effects into other countries such as Australia whose government seems to revere Trump and, by extension, enabled a number of alt-right movements.
  • The murdock press has had almost unrestrained freedom to tear apart anyone they want because extreme right winged beliefs are now so normal
  • People are simultaneously doubting the press more than ever, and yet believing it more than ever
  • Flat Earth and QAnon conspiracy theories exist as a directly result of Trump. WTF.
  • There are more extreme cases of police brutality, egged on by self righteous cops who feel empowered by Trump and the rise of the alt-right.
  • Trump defunding the CDC, completely bungling COVID, resulting in America remaining the largest country effected by COVID and, as other countries are coming down from it, America is still in full force resulting in the highest death toll so far
  • That’s also ignoring all the people who feel as though they can justify this decision on the grounds that the economy would suffer a bit or the belief that people dying isn’t so bad, as long as its not the worst thing killing people (re: COVID & Flu Deathtoll).
  • The fucking wall.
  • The continuation of the belief that unemployment is good regardless of whether or not the money provided is enough to live on. By extension, he introduced a new tax cut, promises to help the middle/lower class. It didnt, and actually made their tax worse while cutting it for the upper class.
  • He just fucking lies, constantly. not even shitty politician lies, but outright, fabrications with no weight behind him.
  • He’s taken more leave than any other American president in history
  • Trump ought to have been kicked out several times over and still hasn’t been
  • He has used his presidency to promote and sell products
  • He has used his presidency to avoid conviction. In fact, two weeks after his election he settled three fraud lawsuits related to his university. And that’s among many, many others
  • He called African countries ‘shitholes’, Mexican people ‘Racists’, and Nazis ‘Very fine people’.
  • He’s paid people off
  • He’s incited violence against several groups
  • Nepotism

And that’s, legit, not everything because his reign of hot fucking nonsense is so thick that we beginning to mistake it for the air we breath.

I actually don’t care why you don’t like Biden. I don’t care if you think that Obama isn’t actually that good because he was directly involved in the killing of hundred of people during the Iraq War. I don’t care if you think voting means being an active agent in choosing. Trump is among the worst presidents the world has ever faced. Such to the point where the world is beginning to believe his BS, and the only way to cope is to turn a blind eye to it. But fuck that, and fuck you. I’m pulling you out of your ignorance to tell you this. Passivity is a privilege that those who are directly affected by his actions can’t afford to that, and by not voting you are putting lives in danger.

Get off your thumb, and go fucking vote. Vote because your life depends on it.

This is what we all saw during the debate...

“Joe Biden is a stutterer. Like many others, he has overcome the disability by understanding it and exercising extraordinary perseverence and discipline. If you know and love a stutterer and you watched the presidential debate last night, within minutes it became obvious what was going on. Abusive tone of voice, rapid fire interruptions, zigzagging change of topic, personal insult and humiliation, and family pain are all tripwires that scramble a stutterer's ability to speak. There was nothing unplanned or spontaneous in the President's strategy. The bastards did not prep him to attack Joe. They prepped him to attack Joe's disability hoping that by triggering his stuttering they might deceive an audience unfamiliar with the disability into thinking that Joe was stupid, weak, uncertain, confused, or lost to dementia.

If you have ever gotten in the face of bully on the playground protecting a stutterer that you love, the game being played last night was nakedly and painfully obvious. If you watched with glee while it happened, then you haven't made much progress since the playground.

However, the stutterer that I love taught me early on that he did not so much need my protection. He fought back by owning and integrating his disability into who he is. He learned how to stand his ground as master of perseverence, knowledge, and empathy. Without his example, I would not have recognized the game that was being played last night. I would not have been able to recognize the subtle but intense struggle against the disability that Joe was winning at the same time he was struggling to advance his positions on the issues in the midst of a rhetorical shit storm.

But, like the stutterer that I know, Joe didn't need any help on the playground. I was proud of him.

The President flushed his family fortune down a gold-plated toilet and somehow wants us to believe that he is the poor victim of mean people. Then he tries, and fails, to beat up a kid with a disability on the playground.

I'm done with this, guys. I want my country back. Thanks, Joe.”

Please stop making posts discouraging people from voting, especially if you don't live in the US. This isn't your fight, and you seem to think it doesn't matter who wins to you anyway. Let those of us who won't survive another Trump term deal with it. Hi. Me. Anarchist and socialist ideals are cool and all, but I won't get to be a part of them because I'll be fucking dead. This is not an exaggeration. I am 26 and I expect to be dead in 2-3 years if Trump wins. If Biden wins not only will I survive, but I will have the energy to fight his old racist ass on every awful thing he does.

Hey guess what: Trump has plans to eliminate Disability next year. He has the authority to do it by the method he is choosing.

Biden plans to expand Disability, increasing the amount you receive as well as granting ACTUAL MARRIAGE EQUALITY FOR DISABLED PEOPLE

I had to call off my engagement so that I can apply for Disability, but if Trump wins it won't even matter because Disability won't exist this time next year.

The idea that there is no difference between Trump and Biden is co-morbid with apathy for your disabled comrades. If Trump wins, I will probably lose access to my medications and be forced to work so my family can survive. The problem is that literally any job can and will kill me. I don't expect to make it halfway through 2023 if Trump wins the election. And that's just me. How many thousands or tens of thousands or more are in my situation? How many hundreds of thousands are WORSE OFF than I am?

Vote blue so there is a politician in office who we can actually fight on his bullshit. Don't stop protesting. Don't stop calling and writing. Push for the end of gerrymandering and the electoral college. But make sure your Disabled friends and loved ones are there to see the future you're trying to create.

Did liberals collectively forget that Hilary won the popular vote the moment that fact stopped being rhetorically useful to them

“Look where sitting on your hands got us last election” what in the god damn fuck are you talking about

“If you don’t vote for Blue Team than that’s a vote for the Red Team” oh, is that how it happened the last time?

Avatar

Yes, that’s how it happened. It’s because we don’t go by the popular vote, we go by a little thing you might’ve heard called the electoral college.

Trump won Michigan by .3 percent, Wisconsin by 1 percent. Pennsylvania by 1.2 percent. Florida by 1.2 percent. North Carolina by 3.8 percent. And Arizona by 3.9 percent. That’s a total of a paltry 491,719 votes. Just four hundred and ninety two thousand votes. And those are only the states that were razor thin in margin.

Yet over 100 million eligible voters didn’t vote at all, and 5 million voters voted third party. That’s 105 MILLION people who could have made the difference. 492k goes into 105 million 23 times. 492k goes into 5 million, the number of those who voted third party, 10 times. Ten god damn times. That’s how many fucking people that is.

If just some of those states had gone to Clinton, she would have won. But they didn’t, and it’s because millions of people decided voting at all was too much trouble, or they decided that wasting their vote in a protest of ideology was more important than actual human lives.

It’s really just that simple.

Okay I wanna piggy back off of the previous reply to show y’all something real quick. I live in New York state, in The City(yes, that one). One of those ‘my vote will never matter because the state always goes blue!’ states.

Here’s the map of the results for New York state in the 2016 presidential election:

Now I know you’re thinking - holy shit balls that’s a lot of red!

And you’re fucking goddamn right it is! Trump had 36% of the vote in New York in 2016. For reference, although that’s about the percentage that usually goes to the republican candidate, here are the maps for 2008 and 2012 respectively:

Before I get into the main part of this post, wanna know WHY all those areas that were blue in 2008 and 2012 were suddenly red in 2016? In 2008 and 2012, Independents got less than 2% of the total votes. In 2016? Almost 6%. Not a big difference in the grand scheme, but this is a really great example of how even a small number can make a huge difference.

Now, see that teeny, tiny, area of dark blue down at the bottom? That’s New York City. New York City is literally the only reason New York State always goes blue. This ONE FUCKING CITY is the reason people are so sure that New York - which holds 29 electoral votes - will never, ever, go to a republican. And under normal circumstances, while that doesn’t make me comfortable, it does hold a certain amount of weight. It’s also why in the 2016 election I voted in my home county of Schoharie - one of those nice bright red areas up north.

Except here’s the thing about 2020. New York City is fucking empty.

24,000 people died of coronavirus in New York City alone this summer

An additional estimated 500,000 - no you are not reading that number wrong - have either moved out or been evicted. I work as a dog walker, and a full 60% of my client base has left the city and told me they are not planning to come back. They’ve left for places like Connecticut(7 electoral votes), or Massachusetts(11), or Vermont(3) or Florida or Texas or - you get my point. Now that they have been unemployed for six+ months, and the eviction freeze has been lifted, a shit ton of people are being forced to leave, and people with kids are also abandoning the city for somewhere less populated.

And even further? No one I know has received their requested mail-in ballots yet. No one. Not a single person. The virus is still active(and yeah, we’re down to <1% infection rate, but schools are about to open back up so :) ) Voting takes place in schools. it is likely many people will not be able to risk voting in person - especially if we see an uptick in cases as kids return. Which means if their mail in ballots don’t arrive in time, they may not be able to vote at all.

Hilary had around 4.5 million votes from New York - 2 million of those came from NYC and the surrounding boroughs. She won the popular vote in this state by 1.8 million votes.

Now, yes, a small number of the people who have left NYC are also Trump Voters. Something like 15% of NYC’s vote went to Trump. But a much higher percentage are democratic - and committedly democratic - votes. Healthcare workers suffered disproportionately from CV deaths. Startups, Small business owners, College and recent college grads, Theatre workers? They’re all gone.

New York State can, honestly, no longer be counted on to go blue no matter who abstains from voting or who votes third party because of the toll the virus has taken on the city. We really do need every single person who is able to vote, to do so. Not because it’s fun, or it makes you happy. Not because you believe 100% in the american democratic system. Because the people you - yes - you, the abstainers - have counted on to uphold your few, dwindling democratic freedoms, can no longer be counted on to do so alone.

Gerrymandering sucks. The electoral college needs to be abolished. But it is specifically because those things are still in place that you need to vote if you are able. We absolutely should be fighting the system. But we cannot abandon it to let it fall to ruin and leave the people affected by that fallout to die because of it while we gather our strength. And yes. People will die. If this summer has taught us anything, let it be that elections fucking matter and in the coming years, our leadership absolutely has the ability to determine how many of us survive.

TL;DR: If you have the ability to vote please fucking use it. This is not a normal election year, and the safeguards that have been in place are no longer to be relied upon.

We haven’t forgotten how 2016 went down - when we say vote it’s because we remember how much of a difference a very small number of people could have made, and we know that this year, that difference is even more important.

Imagine if all the people who thought that they could get a world with Hillary as president instead of Trump without having to bruise their egos by personally voting for her had actually bothered to cast their vote to help *make sure* that she got more votes than Trump. If Biden doesn’t win the White House and the left doesn’t retake the Senate, we will lose the last chance we have to tackle the gerrymandering issue. (Not to mention all of the OTHER issues.) If we don’t at least have a shot at fixing the places gerrymandering by republicans is a problem, we’re looking at elections in the future being even harder for leftist candidates to win. We’re looking at a situation where, if the democrats DID decide to run a candidate that somehow appealed to both the far left AND enough moderates for them to have a shot at getting enough votes to win against a conservative opponent, it’s unlikely that they’d actually win because the corruption by then will have gotten too entrenched. It’s pretty fucking entrenched NOW, but at least there are chances for it getting fixed in places if the GOP doesn’t retain power. That’s not a promise it will get fixed everywhere, but it’s a CHANCE it will get fixed in a lot of places, as opposed to having ZERO CHANCE that it will under republican rule. Don’t you want a chance at fixing things so that future elections are more fair? Don’t you want to help democracy survive long enough for you to see the day we actually get to vote for candidates we have no reservations of supporting? ….Don’t you want to help start rebuilding our foundations so that by the time AOC runs for president we’ll be in a position to properly support her? Yeah?  Then suck it up and vote for Biden in 2020. Because that’s what you need to do NOW if you want any kind of shot of getting the future you want.

If the purity-leftists had been willing to set aside their egos for the sake of the country in 2016, there would literally be more Americans alive today. And we could have been taking the steps in 2020 that now have to wait until 2024 because we’re stuck trying to triage what the country has suffered under Trump for the last four years. Don’t let your ego be the reason we’re stuck with Trump for another four.

Here’s my advice to everyone who thinks that the election will be so fraudulent that it won’t matter, who thinks 45 will not cede power, etc, etc:

  1. Vote so that the history books know it was fraudulent. -
  2. Vote so the contemporary world knows it’s fraudulent. -
  3. Vote so that he is actually committing the crime, and not just attempting it but winding up not needing to. -
  4. Vote not because you like Joe Biden (ew), but because the establishment as it stands will take low votes against 45 as approval. Vote to communicate the crime that is happening in the most severe degree. Vote so that if he pulls some bullshit, it has to be the most obviously illegal bullshit possible.

These are not just talking points. These are steps to make action against a fraudulent government, if it happens, easier. To make it possible. To make the public understand.

I can’t stress enough, the larger the margin between Biden’s votes and Trump’s votes, the less likely Trump will get away with whatever tomfoolery he tries to pull

Instead of guilting young people into community action and making voting seem almost useless, how bout we share some resources about how to vote and overwhelmingly encourage doing so as soon as possible, hm?

If you're not sure where to start with voting this year - either bc it's your first time or bc you usually vote on E-Day in person and now that may be an option, or bc you're intimidated by structural barriers - here's a good place to start:

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/how-to-vote-2020/

A bit sus how a bunch of posts have been popping up lately targeted towards young liberal people about how voting is useless 😳

A trend I’ve been seeing among non-voters is that “direct action” is more important than voting, but more often than not, the people who make these claims don’t even partake in any form of direct action.

If you do nothing but spew anarchist bullshit, then you’re not helping anyone. If you actually care about the state of our country, should AT THE VERY LEAST vote. It’s common sense.

Whenever someone starts talking about voting resources, I always like to boost Vote411! Run by the venerable non-partisan nonprofit League of Women Voters, you can register to vote, check your registration status, and also research your entire ballot and compare candidates, down to local races and ballot measures. Then you can email your choices to yourself (or print it out, if your state doesn’t allow phones in the polling place). The pre-research makes the physical voting process go very fast, which is ideal in this time of pandemic but also great in normal times.

If you’re new to voting and want to plan, or are just wondering things like “WTF is a Texas Railroad Commissioner and why do I care?” (answer: actually super important and in charge of oil/gas/mineral rights) or “there are 14 local judges to vote for, who??? are these people and where do they stand on important justice issues?” then this is the site for you.

he’s literally rigging the election and next to nothing’s being done about it what the actual fucking living hell

HE’S LITERALLY TARGETING USPS IN BLUE AREAS WHERE HE LOST THE LAST ELECTION

If you feel unsafe about voting in person (because, y’know, we’re in the middle of a goddam pandemic) but now fear the USPS will be unable to deliver a “mail-in” ballot in a timely fashion….

1. Request a mail-in ballot.

2. Do not mail it.

3. Google your supervisor of elections to see where you can drop off your mail-in ballot. It’s usually NOT THE POLLING PLACE.

All states allow this! Here is what you’re accomplishing by doing this:

1. Your ballot gets in on time no matter what happens to the USPS.

2. You don’t have to worry about standing in long lines and risking infection. You’re just stopping by to drop it off.

3. You voted! Hooray! I have no doubt Trump and his supporters are doing to try to call into question the legitimacy of mail-in voting (which is more enthusiastically embraced by Democratic supporters, especially now.)

Also, when you drop it off, find out how to track it online to make sure it is verified. California, Oregon, Washington, and Colorado have systems that can track your ballot just like tracking a package from Amazon.

All CA vote centers (which are open for weeks to a month before election day) have ballot drop-off boxes too! Many government buildings have them as well, so there’s no need to wait until election day when it’s crowded to drop them off. The list of drop-off sites is always posted on each county’s voter info website.

This is important! This election is crucial! Get out and vote! We! Cannot! Afford! To! Get! Complacent! This year, every vote matters!

People need to fully understand what RGB’s death means. It’s not just a vacancy on the supreme court that could be potentially filled by a conservative Justice - that’s an awful thought, but that’s not the main problem.

The problem, is that this is EXACTLY the opportunity Republicans have been looking for for decades. If a conservative nominee is pushed through before the election, and I’m hoping it won’t but if it does, that will lead to a Republican majority in the Supreme Court. And you can bet your life, literally, that they will work to roll back every progressive law they can.

The concept of a separation of church and state is already a joke in this country, but it will get so much worse.

But more than that? Even if a nominee isn’t pushed through…

The vacancy RGB left behind will motivate Republicans to come out to vote in droves.

THAT is what everyone needs to understand. This is a once in a life time opportunity for the Republicans. You think you don’t want to vote for Biden because he’s not exactly who you want? Because he’s not progressive enough or liberal enough?

What about all the Republicans who may not support Trump, but want a Republican majority on the Supreme Court? The ones who may not like him, but would be willing to deal with him for four more years if it means controlling the Supreme Court for the next 40?

It’s awful and unfortunate that RGB died so close to the election. Throughout her life she worked tirelessly to fight for equality. Don’t let her life be in vain.

Now more than ever, it’s important to vote. Everyone. Down the entire ballot.

I’m lucky enough to live in California, a historically Blue state. But those of my followers who live in Red states, you especially need to call your representatives in the Senate and tell them to postpone any nomination. Cite Mitch McConnell’s own actions in 2016. Anything you can do to add pressure. Remind them who they really work for: you, their constituents.

We cannot give up the fight. We can’t. Your vote matters. If it didn’t, why would the GOP be trying so hard to take it away? Make sure you’re registered. If you want to mail in your ballot then drop it off at designated polling stations instead of the post office to ensure it’s counted in time.

I don’t have many followers so I don’t know who will see this, but please, reblog this. Spread the information. RBG’s death will galvanize Republicans out to vote en masse. We can’t afford to be apathetic or disenfranchised. We can make a difference, but not if we don’t bother to try.

Some of the positions of Biden going into this election:

  • Abolish the death penalty.
  • End cash bail as it disproportional punishes the poor.
  • End cocaine sentencing disparity as racist
  • Eliminate mandatory minimums
  • Scrap past marijuana convictions
  • Eliminate private prisons
  • Raise minimum wage to 15$/hour
  • Supports a government mandated 12 weeks of paid family leave for all workers
  • Two years of college free
  • Expand student debt forgiveness, including 10K of forgiveness for all student loans and complete forgiveness for all undergraduate loans from 2 and 4 year public colleges and universities, and other loan forgiveness and payment reduction plans.
  • Eliminate funding gap for k-12 schools based on location (essentially between white and non white/poor and non poor division) with specific first steps outlined to do so.
  • Increase teacher pay, especially in underfunded schools (poor and POC schools)
  • Plan outlined to get us back in on the Paris agreement and goal of switching to clean energy by 2035 with first steps specified.
  • Supports voluntary gun buyback (similar programs have had huge success in reducing gun violence in other countries)
  • Supports firearm registry
  • Supports universal background checks for fire arm purchase
  • Supports huge expansions of medicare and the creation of a public run health insurance option that everyone is automatically enrolled in if they lose other coverage. You would also be able to use this free option if you did not want to use employer coverage. He has moved left in a huge way since the pandemic came into full swing but most people just ignore it. There is a good chance that by the time we get to the point of implementation he could just go medicare for all.
  • Citizenship for dreamers (DACA)
  • Outlined steps for increasing the quality of life, access to resources, and autonomy of disabled people, including expansion and strict enforcement of non discrimination policies
  • Universal hazard pay for “front line” workers during the pandemic
  • Specific first steps outlined for reducing systematic LGBTQ discrimination
  • Large increase of taxes on the wealthy, including a direct wealth tax and increasing taxes on corporations, with short term proposals in place that include undoing much of the damage done by trump.

You will notice that a lot of these positions can be described as halfway progressive. As in they move in the right direction but stop short of the ultimate goal. Sure, we didn’t win the primary and get a truly progressive candidate in, but the strong showing of progressive ideals during the primary means that we strong armed the democrat party into compromising with us. We forcibly moved the Overton window significantly left, imagine if we did this election after election! We could force real change regardless of the presidential candidate that is ultimately chosen.

We are slowly winning, but in order for it to stick we have to demonstrate that progressives will reward the shift in our direction. We absolutely need to vote Biden in, as well as support democrats in the senate, congress, and local levels. We need to prove that progressives are a powerful political group that can make promises and deliver to those who compromise with us. This is critical for the long term viability of progressive politics.

Biden isn’t just damage control. We wont be sprinting towards an ideal world but we will be taking significant steps in that direction. Don’t throw away all the progress we made because you don’t like the names on the ticket.

Okay, I’ve read Joe Biden’s plans.

I’ve just sat down and spent several hours actually reading all the damn plans on his website, the whole thing, so you don’t have to. And here’s the conclusion:

They’re pretty good.

Are they absolutely everything we want immediately? Maybe not. Are they a solid Democratic agenda anyway? Yes they are. Are they better than Trump?

Light years!

His Violence Against Women plan is lengthy, detailed, and pays specific attention to violence against Native, lesbian and bisexual, low-income, disabled, rural, transgender (especially trans women of color) immigrant, domestic abuse victims, and other vulnerable women. He calls for replacing and expanding Obama-era policies and funding for campus sexual assault programs that DeVos trashed, and for providing money for culturally specific services that are sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of survivors. He also notes that sexual assault, while it predominantly affects women and girls, needs to be taken seriously and addressed for people of all gender identities.

His gun safety plan is forceful and lays out several steps for banning assault weapons, taking existing weapons from offenders, closing gun purchase background check and other legal loopholes, addressing the intersection between domestic violence and weapons ownership, and reducing or eliminating weapons and ammunition stockpiling.

His plan for tackling climate change and creating green jobs is also lengthy. He makes the connection between economic, environmental, and racial justice. He pledges to immediately rejoin the Paris Agreement and restore American leadership on the issue in pushing for even stronger climate standards, make climate change a central part of our trade, international, and justice goals, demand a worldwide ban on fossil fuel subsidies and tax breaks (!!!) and if the Green New Deal is passed, to sign it, as well as for the U.S. to achieve 100% clean energy and zero percent net emissions by 2050.

His healthcare plan is decent. It offers an immediate public option for all Americans regardless of private, employer, or no coverage, and generous new tax credits to put toward the cost of coverage. It strongly protects abortion rights and federal funding for Planned Parenthood, as well as rescinding the “gag rule” that prevents U.S. federal aid money from being used to provide or even talk about abortions in NGOs abroad. It attacks generic and drug price gouging. It calls for doubling the capital gains tax on the super-wealthy (from 20% to 39.5% paid on capital gains by anyone making over $1 million) to help fund healthcare reform. He also has a separate plan on the opioid crisis in America, and on older Americans and retirement, including the protection and re-funding of Medicare and Social Security.

His immigration plan is lengthy and detailed. He apologizes for and acknowledges the excessive deportation that occured during the Obama-Biden administrations, pledges to do better, and attacks Trump’s current inhumane acitivities on every front. The policy of children in cages, indefinite detention, the metered asylum system, and the Muslim Ban are gone on day one. In this and his LGBTQ plan, he notes the vulnerability of LGBTQ refugees, incuding LGBTQ refugees of color. He proposes streamlining of visa applications and prioritizing the immediate reunification of families. It also specifically states that ICE and CBP agents will be held directly accountable for inhumane treatment.

Speaking of which, his LGBTQ plan is comprehensive. It pays attention to multiple intersectional issues, down to the high rates of incarceration among trans people of color. (He also notes the rates of violence against trans women of color particularly.) He calls for a complete ban on conversion therapy and the discrimination against HIV-status individuals, as well as removing the ban on blood donation from gay and bisexual men. He will remove the transgender military ban immediately. He calls for funding for mental health and suicide prevention among LGBTQ populations.

His plan to empower workers calls for raising the federal minimum wage to $15, as well as indexing this to median hourly wages to ensure that working-class and middle-class wages grow closer to parity, and implementing strong legal protections for unions. He expresses support for striking workers and to empower the National Labor Relations Board in workplace advocacy. Farmworkers, domestic workers, gig economy workers, and other non-traditional labor groups are included in this. He will restore all Obama-Biden policies related to workplace safety and regulation.

His plan to restore American dignity and leadership in the world calls for immediately investing in election security and reform, restoration of the Voting Rights Act, immediately restoring White House press briefings and other Trump refusals of information, tackling criminal justice reform and systematic racial discrimination, calling for campaign finance reform, and basically blowing up all the stupid things the Trump administration does on a daily basis. It also calls for an end to all ongoing wars in the Middle East, restoring the Iran nuclear deal, and new arms control treaties with Russia, among general repairing of international alliances.

His plans for K-12 education and post-high school education call for greatly expanded funding across all levels of 2-year, 4-year, and other educational options. There will be no student loan payments for anyone making under $25,000 a year; everyone else will pay a capped amount and be completely forgiven after a certain period. Public servants qualify for up to $50,000 in loan forgiveness. This is not total loan forgiveness for everyone, which is obviously important for me and many of us, but it’s acceptable to start with. Additionally, his wife is a teacher and has a proven track record of calling for education investment and supporting public school funding.

His plan for housing addresses the needs of formerly incarcerated, LGBTQ, veteran, low-income, sexual assault survivor, black and Hispanic, and other vulnerable populations at risk of losing housing. It calls for a tax on companies and corporations with in excess of $50 billion in assets to fund comprehensive new housing initiatives, including $100 billion in accessible and low-income housing development. It includes extensive investment in public transportation and a high-speed rail system. This ties into his plan to repair infrastructure and invest in new technologies across the country.

His plan for criminal justice reform calls for the end of mass incarceration, the decriminalization of marijuana, the automatic expunging of all cannabis convictions, and an end on jail sentences for drug use. It highlights systematic institutional racism and the impact on black and brown people particularly. It calls for an end on all profiteering and private prisons. It focuses on reintegrating offenders into society and funding the needs of people released from prison. It proposes to “expand and use the power of the U.S. Justice Department to address systemic misconduct in police departments and prosecutors’ offices.” It broadens funding for social services and other programs for people who are otherwise placed into the prison pipeline.

There are more plans, which you can find here. These are the ones I read top to bottom. I am not by any means a Joe Biden fangirl; he was not my first choice, my second choice, or really anywhere on my list. However, having carefully read through his policy documents, I can say that:

  • He has at the least a good team of advisors who are keenly aware of the political climate, and is willing to both restore Obama-era standards and to improve on them where necessary. Obviously, all politicians’ promises are politicians’ promises, but this is a solid Democratic platform with obvious awareness of the progressive wing of the party.
  • If progressive legislation is passed in the House and Senate, he will sign it, including the Green New Deal.
  • He represents a clear and definite improvement over Donald Trump.
  • Is he everything we want? No. Are his policies better than I was expecting? Yes. I advise you to read through them for yourself. It has made me at least feel better about the likelihood of voting for him.
  • I realize it’s an unsexy position, especially on tumblr, to advocate for an old centrist white man. I’m not thrilled about having to do it. However, speaking as someone who was very resistant to Biden and still doesn’t agree with all of his previous legislative track record, that’s my consensus. He is a candidate who broadly aligns with values that I care about. His policies represent a concrete end to the damage of the Trump administration and gets us on the right track again.

Joe Biden, if he is the Democratic nominee, will receive my vote on November 3, 2020. I urge you to consider what I’ve laid out above and join me.

My feed is currently exploding with the fact that Biden picked Kamala Harris as his veep. I would like to remind my friends of the following points:

1) She's a cop, and we're allowed to be unhappy. We're allowed to be mad, even.

2) We are not just voting for the Presidency. We are also voting for Ruth Bader Ginsburg's replacement. And a lot of other stuff, but let RBG retire or die secure in the knowledge that doing so will not fuck over this country.

3) "Kamala Harris is a cop and ACAB" and "Kamala Harris's nomination represents a number of important firsts in the field of politics" are both solid takes that do not cancel one another out and in fact coexist because we do not live in a magic Star Wars world where we have just have the Light Side and Dark Side.

4) The immigrants currently being held in cages and doused with weapons-grade disinfectant by our own government will not appreciate the subtleties of our political choices if we elect Trump for a second term through our inaction or dithering. For that matter, the people dying of COVID because Trump gutted the pandemic response team and then mishandled our response to the virus will not appreciate them. Because they're dying or dead. Because we couldn't get our shit together four years ago. My own mother may be one of these people. I'll never know for sure.

You're all adults, and I'm not here to tell you what to do. I will, however, share what I'm going to do: I will vote for Biden and his cop sidekick in November. And then if Trump gets a second term anyway, I'm arming myself and getting my ducks in order to go underground, because my Jewish wife and I are not going into the gas chambers quietly.
