I know the genie is out of the bottle and you can't go back but dear GOD I hate the mainstreamification of fandom so much

I do NOT want authors or showrunners or actors to acknowledge us or talk about fanfic or fanart or fan theories! I do NOT want people asking questions of the canon creators and getting them answered (make up your own answers, like god intended!) I do NOT want companies making jokey advertisements aimed toward fandom!

I know that fandom was never entirely underground but like... I miss that fourth wall existing, you know?

the problem with not voting in order to send the message that you hate all the candidates and the entire system and therefore refuse to participate is that it's completely indistinguishable, as a signal, from not bothering to vote because you think the system is great and all the candidates are great and you'd be fine with any of them. so you might want to rethink the strategy there

So do people realize that we aren't building new train tracks when we expand the amteak network, I have multiple times seen people say that we shouldn't expand the network because it would destroy protected lands, which would be a fair criticism but Amtrak doesn't build new tracks, we use existing tracks. We are not destroying protected lands, we are using land that has already been clear for a century

Also the alternative is more highways which destroy significantly more land for less capacity than railways. So the question is do you want to keep complaining about something that isn't happening and let the environment get damaged as a result or do you want to actually learn how things work

So, wait... Were the tracks not in use at all? Or was it like *only* commercial transport on those tracks? Either way, its good that amtrak will be able to use them again, but one would be much more frustrating

Almost all rail tracks in the US are either abandoned or only used for freight rail at the moment

Jesus, we really have no excuse for having such a lackluster rail system, do we?

Sure we do! The US government hate both rail and you personally

Cartoons messed people up on what rabies looks like. Ppl think of a rabid animal and assume it's always snarling and frothing at the mouth and ready to attack. Rabid animals can appear really friendly because they lose human fear and they might approach you supposedly looking for food. It might look like a deer stumbling in circles and limping and falling over as if it's injured and disoriented. Might looks like a fox repeatedly trying and failing to stumble to its feet and unable to pick its head up. Their brains are melting. They might seem angry but they might also seem confused or injured or in need. But if you try to help that injured crying fox you could end up getting bit by an animal that's basically already dead and then your brain will melt too

ABSOLUTELY. A lot of rabid animals look sick and injured and your natural instinct is wanting to help them. People do not know what rabies actually looks like. There is a reason you aren't supposed to interact with wild animals, ESPECIALLY ones that seem friendly.

These animals all look sick, because they are sick. Rabies is so much more than just aggression. If you saw an animal like this it would be hard NOT to want to help it. It looks like it's sold because it is. It looks like it's in pain because it is. Everyone should know what rabies looks like because it is 100% fatal, there is no cure for rabies, if you are exposed to rabies and don't get treatment there is nothing that can be done for you. Once you have symptoms of rabies appear, it is too late. You are going to die and you are going to die one of the worst deaths imaginable. PLEASE make sure you never fuck around with rabies, if you are ever bit by a wild animal, ESPECIALLY a bat, do not ever risk it, go to the hospital immediately. Do not hesitate literally ever ever ever

some tips on how to tell if an animal (most useful for house pets and city animals) has rabies, from a distance. Keep in mind that i am NOT an animal doctor or scientist, this is just what i know from good ole practical experience and help from my grandparents.

  • does the animal look confused or in a place its not supposed to be
  • is it dirtier than the other animals of that species youve seen in your area
  • does it appear malnourished
  • is it moving abnormally

remember to stay safe and keep a distance from ALL wild animals!

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

Rabies is extremely common in bats (at least in the southern US, where I'm from). It's important to never touch any bat, period, if you can help it, as their fangs and claws are small enough they can break the skin and potentially infect you without you realizing it. Obviously not all bats are rabid, but it's prevalent enough you should assume any bat you see carries the virus, especially:

  • any bat you see outside in the daytime, as bats are nocturnal
  • any bat you see sitting or laying on the ground, as they prefer to roost in high places
  • any bat you see indoors, as bats, like other wild animals, live outside

Notice a common thread here: all of these things indicate abnormal behavior, which is one of the most visible symptoms of rabies. If you see a bat and your first thought is, "Huh, I've never seen a bat do [x] before," you should be on alert. If it let you approach it, touch it, or pick it up without trying to get away, put it down, call animal control, and get to a doctor to get vaccinated, even if you don't think it scratched or bit you. Better yet, just don't do these things in the first place - keep your distance and call animal control without approaching it.

Bats do get inside sometimes - if you find a bat in your house, call animal control and don't try to chase it out yourself. If you've had any physical contact with the bat or if there's a chance it could have gotten into your room while you were sleeping, you need to get vaccinated. (Sorry the article is paywalled - I couldn't find a free version but still wanted to cite my source. If you sign up for an account it gives you two articles for free, if you want to read about an actual case where someone caught rabies in this manner.)

All this is not to fearmonger about rabies. As long as you make good decisions - don't mess with wild animals, vaccinate your pets, and get vaccinated ASAP if there's a chance you could have been exposed - rabies is 100% preventable. Depending on what's available where you live, the vaccine can have some rough side effects, yeah, but it's not as rough as it used to be and, I cannot stress this enough, it works. I've seen people spread misinformation about the vaccine before, saying that it's dangerous or horribly painful - this is not true. (That one's from the WHO, it's in English and French, and it's not paywalled. Enjoy).

The vaccine is safe and effective, and if you might have been exposed, it will save your life. Prevention - by following the advice in this post - will also save your life. As long as you know what to look for and what to do, there's no need to live in fear.
